Topic: Equal Ratings: Monolith vs Time and a Word Posted: May 28 2010 at 20:21 |
Here, one of classic Kansas' latter albums comes face to face with an early Yes record.
Do you prefer Monolith or Time and a Word, both of which currently stand at 3.23 stars?

I prefer Kansas as a band, but I go with A Time and a Word for one reason: Yes was growing, Kansas was going downhil, so at it's moment ATaaW was the best Yes album, while Monolith was the worst Kansas album when released.

I like Monolith, it's a 1979 record and has sense in that era, of course it's not Leftoverture or Point of Known Return but I enjoy it all the same. Time and a Word is one of those records that enter in one ear and quit through the other without affecting any of my synapses. Everybody got his taste, and probably it's because Monolith is linked to my teen good vibes, but I prefer even just On the Other Side than the whole Yes record.

As Ivan says, Yes were still growing as a band whereas, Kansas had peaked with earlier recordings. Monolith could not be counted as one of Kansas' great efforts imo.

I have never heard Monolith, so no vote. But Yes showed an enormous growth from Time and a Word to The Yes Album.

But again, neither could "Time And A Word" in the context of Yes' discography so...
Not that this is a definitive idea or absolute opinion, but when comparing two albums by their sole artistic merits, I don't see why an album by a band that had just passed its very creative peak could not be better than an album by a band that was still groing in its greatness.
A good album by a band that stopped being extraordinary a few motnths go can still surpass many albums made by bands that haven't matured properly yet. Messi on a so-so day can still be a better soccer player than Raúl on a reasonably good day.
Kind regards.

If that was the exclusive reason, I would maybe agree with you, even when each person decides which album and why he/she prefers.
In this case
- Don't consider any of both the peak of the production of their band
- Reviewed both and rated them exactly with 3 stars
- Consider both albums average at the most.
- A Time and a Word is uneven with great tracks (Then, Sweet Dreams, Time and a Word) and other bellow the average
- Monolith is very even, not a single song bellow the average, but with no great tracks
So if they are tied in most aspects, I rather vote for a band growing rather than for a band in trhe beginning of the decadence, plus the fact trhat I believe that AtaaW has some memorable songs but Monolith none..
Now, as I said, Kansas is one of my favorite bands while Yes not, but I am voting for an album.

As opposed to the British version of Time? I'm not sure your blood is circulating where it should. . .
