So far what I've seen in the thread doesn't sound scary as much as it sounds either interesting (more artists to check out!) or soothing (I am a sucker for ambient things). Scary things and nightmares are my home territory, so it's all usually a picnic!

However, Aphex Twin was mentioned, and I gotta admit some of his songs ... are pretty out there. To the point that even I get a wee bit weirded out. His videos are usually pretty funny.

The one song that actually SCARES me is by Aphex Twin, but it's neither Windowlicker nor Come To Daddy (which is hilarious) nor the one from Rubber Johnny (afx-number something, which is ... actually catchy) but this (from an unreleased album of his called Melodies From Mars).

Don't laugh. ...At least try not to. I've no idea what's scary about it, but it's the single most terrifying song I know of! It's a pretty silly ditty, but it absolutely horrifies me. There's something deeply deranged about it that I can't put my finger on.
A negative number was raised to a power that is not an integer.

All of these songs should be listened too with the lights off and headphones on.
Clint Mansell & The Kronos Quartet - Meltdown. The perfect song to lose your sanity too.
Lustmord - Black Star. Like being on an alien planet and hearing the roars of far off beasts.
Krzysztof Penderecki - Polymorphia. Basically anything by Penderecki will leave your nerves feeling raw after listening.
Isolrubin BK - Motor Vehicle Collision Victim Removal Procedure. Controversial project from Brian Williams of Lustmord on traumatizing and violent car accidents. Not for the faint of heart.
Current 93 - Faust. Welcome to David Tibet's Sanatorium.
Current 93 - A Soft Voice Whispers Nothing. C93 and Thomas Ligotti.
Throbbing Gristle - Hamburger Lady. A song about a burn victim.
Tool - Faaip De Oiad. Never fails to send a chill throughout my whole body.

Oh man these are great and thankfully I have had the good fortune of hearing all of them in my time. Love the Mansell one from the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack. Awesome. Just love it.
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

Procol Harum - Home

It is creepy if you listen to "The Dead Man's Dream", "Still There'll Be More" & "About to Die" instead Wink

Listened to Home yesterday, and completely forgot about "The Dead Man's Dream" lyrics. To think it's only the 2nd track in makes it feel even darker... Great song though Big smile

Everything else has probably been suggested but:

Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica (at first)
Comus - First Utterance
Egg - s/t (stuff like "Blane")
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F#A# infinity
King Crimson - Larks' Tongues In Aspic
Pink Floyd - A Saucerful Of Secrets, The Wall
Klaus Schulze - Irrlicht
Swans - To Be Kind
Tangerine Dream - Zeit
Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat

What about scary album covers? Toe Fat's debut comes to mind...

I suppose some selections off SCHICKE FUHRS & FROHLING's Symphonic Pictures are a little unsettling (what a great band).

I think it has to be Revolution 9 by The Beatles. It's personal really-I was 13 when the Manson murders hit the world's press, and I remember being horrified by the whole episode. A few years I discovered what an influence this particular track had been on the Manson family before they went and butchered all those people....dark, dark, dark.

I really want to like Scott Walker but for some reason I just can't take his voice seriously; it takes away any creepiness the songs might have.

The Halloween edition of PRI’s Science Friday included this feature on scary music and includes a list of scary songs/albums.  Some great choices, a few of which popped up in this thread already.

Okay, this one’s a lot tamer than most on this thread—I find it more poignant and tragic than scary—but it’s still worth hearing:

I'd like to recommend Sickness To Insanity: Electronic Horror Scores Realized by Vision Heat 1982-1988 by Vision Heat.

"Vision Heat is a ficticious soundtrack and library music production company operating out of the Eastern Block between 1980-1988. "Sickness To Insanity" compiles some of the best synth based, B-Movie horror themes and incidental music it produced from the years 1982-1988. What makes Vision Heat so unique is the broad palate of sounds, styles and production between each track. From the catchy electro pop grooves of themes from "Hotel St. Croix" and "Campers" to the dark FM synthesis of "Ambush," "Hellen" and "Mother" all the way to the hard rockers from "Blood and Spirit"and "Witchkraft II." This album showcases Vision Heat's expansive and diverse back catalog.

Some of the master tracks have been lost in the great fire of '91, leaving only the VHS transfers to remain; ultimately, giving those songs their timeless quality and feel. We hope you will enjoy this offering from Vision Heat." http://visionheat.bandcamp.com/album/sickness-to-insanity-electronic-horror-scores-realized-by-vision-heat-1982-1988
