If we're included non-prog artists....

1/2. Genesis (What is there to be said about Genesis that hasn't been said a thousand times before?)
1/2. Brian Eno (The father of ambient music, a pioneer in rock music, and one of the most significant figures in the world of electronic music. One of the true musical geniuses of the 20th century).
3. Tom Waits (Very diverse and creative, particularly with his instrumentation.)
4. Roxy Music (One of the most important bands of the 1970s, Roxy bridged prog and glam before either of them came to full fruition).
5. Frank Zappa/The Mothers (With the Mothers, he derailed modern society with his music; on his own, he was a major jazz fusion composer/performer).
6. Klaus Schulze (Klaus Schulze can create atmosphere like no other).
7. King Crimson (The first major prog act.)
8. Miles Davis (The ultimate jazz musician. He may as well have created jazz fusion, and hugely influenced modal jazz with Kind of Blue in 1969. He also impacted third stream with Sketches of Spain in 1960, and continued innovating until the day he died. Amazing music).
9. Yes (Quintessential prog rock band, if you asked me. Relayer is one of the most unfortunately overlooked albums ever.)
10. Todd Rundgren (Did a little bit of everything; he proved he was a talented singer/songwriter in 1972 with Something/Anything?, but cemented his place in the prog community with A Wizard a True Star in 1973.)
11. Magma (Still the most unique band out there, very spacey and distinctive.)
12. Tangerine Dream (Just overall amazing music...I can't really explain what it is I like about it.)
13. Can (Not particularly complicated, a lot of great improvisation. Tago Mago is the archetypal krautrock album.)
14. Gong (I've never done drugs, but I assume listening to Gong is similar enough to being high.)
15. Gentle Giant (Again, I can't really put my finger on what's great about them...I like the 'medieval' feel to their music, if you'll buy that.)
16. John Coltrane (Great improvisational and free jazz...A Love Supreme is one of the best albums ever recorded, easily in my top ten.)
17. David Bowie (Not much needs to be said, here).
18. Charles Mingus (Avant-garde jazz at its finest, particularly on The Black Saint, The Sinner Lady.)
19. Amon Duul II (Amon Duul II is the best improvisational band in the history of rock music, no doubt about it.)
20. The Kinks (Like the Beatles, but much more sophisticated).

Some of those descriptions are terrible, I know, but it'll have to do.
"When God created Republicans, he gave up on everything else."

actually now that i look at it it´s not that transitional.......it pretty much reflects the core of my musical tastes...
