In 1971, I graduated from high school, worked at the Holiday Inn for the summer, then off to college in the fall.  There are sometimes questions about if it's just nostalgia that draws us to old music.  I don't know.  What I do know is that for many of these bands, these albums represent a peak or near to it, or the beginning of a great run of albums.  I grew up with it.  Not saying I listened to all of these when released (it took a year to catch up with the fusion guys).  Here's just a few of the albums released that year.  Nostalgia or no, I'd listen to most of these any day.  Includes some old rock favorites, so I'll put it here in General.

Sly & the Family Stone – There’s a Riot Goin’ On
Rod Stewart – Every Picture Tells a Story
The Rolling Stones – Sticky Fingers
Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin IV
The Who – Who’s Next
David Bowie – Hunky Dory
Paul & Linda McCartney – Ram
T. Rex – Electric Warrior
Miles Davis – A Tribute to Jack Johnson
Elton John – Madman Across the Water
Traffic – The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
Van Morrison – Tupelo Honey
The Allman Brothers Band – At Fillmore East
Miles Davis – Live-Evil
Funkadelic – Maggot Brain
Jimi Hendrix – The Cry of Love
The Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin – The Inner Mounting Flame
Soft Machine – Fourth
Weather Report – Weather Report
Frank Zappa & the Mothers – Fillmore East: June 1971
Herbie Hancock – Crossings
Black Sabbath – Master of Reality
Pink Floyd – Meddle
Keith Jarrett – Facing You

Yep a pretty good year. I graduated in 1976 and that year sucked for music. But I still like 1973 the best, objectively and all nostalgia aside. Just thought you might be interestedWink

ELP's debut was released in 1970, not 1971.Tongue

Yeah, great year for music.  Two of the greatest albums of all time were released in that year, Pawn Hearts by VDGG and The First Utterance by Comus.

There's always some proggie ready to pounce! LOL Go ahead and add Tarkus, Aqualung, and Pictures at an Exhibition and you just upped the ante.

Damn, forgot about Aqualung.  Can't remember when I got Tarkus.  If it's '71, whoa the year just got a lot better, and rest assured I bought it the day it was available.

So that fall I moved into the dorms.  I've said this before.  A guy could not walk down a hallway and not hear one of either Aqualung or Cat Stevens' Tea For the Tillerman wafting out of a room, along with the smell of controlled substances LOL

I wish we could hear those albums walking down a hallway now at school.  At best we get some punk (and not any of the inventive punkers, usually) and at worst (and most common) nothing but mainstream rap.  That is, unless you pass my room.  Then you can hear all the strange and wonderful bands I enjoy. Tongue

All those came out in 1971 as well. Wink  I'll have to agree, it was a wonderful year for music.

I can almost identify with those who just want to stick to '70's prog, almost...
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
