I have a soft spot for Smiley Smile too. I thought i was the only one...

Pet Sounds is good though...in smallish doses.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

You're not the only one. I love Smiley Smile and rank it only behind Today! as my favorite from the band.

yes, Smiley Smile is great. Yesterday I've listened to Brian Wilson's "Smile" album. A 2004 reconstruction of never released Beach Boys "Smile" (the most of this material was released as Smiley Smile, and some other songs can be find on later albums). If the "Smile" album had been released back then in 1967, Beach Boys would be on PA today...

ugh don't like the beach boys! Why not just listen to good stuff instead? like Soft Machine or countless other bands from that time?

Good vibrations are good though.

Pet Sounds is a great album for the time it was recorded and it's still a great album today.

It's a real shame that most people have yet to hear the 1967 Smile. Smiley Smile is decent and don't get me wrong but, compared to the running tracks for the 67 project? forget it. It doesn't even come close. I have the original tapes and it sounds like a progressive rock opera. Brian Wilson left many ideas and many tracks off the 2004 Smile and it's a real shame. With the 67' version, it's like watching a bizzare film. There are about 5 to 6 tracks from the 67' recording sessions available on the Good Vibrations box set however, there are also 20 more tracks that didn't make the box set and if more people heard them, they would be shocked. Wilson should put the 67' Smile sessions out as a box set. He is a fool not to.

^ yeah it's an absolute blast..but the re-recording is superb too in a different way (though I agree the setlist is not as fun)

I really like the Beach Boys, yet I prefer their 70-77 albums.

There are various "unofficial" versions of Smile around that are pretty close to the original and contain a number of tracks that haven't been released on other albums (including the recent version of Smile).

If you know where to look.
