Good point.
But I remember how much I loved Asia's debut when it came out. It was never off my turntable.......so I've decided my vote goes to that excellent album. |
"Hearts" is wonderful, but there are many highlights on 90125. I think that the album is terribly underrated. Probably because Yes went for something else than their more progressive seventies sound, but I know few albums that have such an attention to detail than 90125.
I love the first Asia album also. The compositions are quite good, even when not very progressive as understood by PA norms, and Wetton and Downes especially were in peak form.
Invisible Touch: not one of my favorite albums, but decent, with good songs and a powerful production, and I used to be nuts about it when it came out.
Oh yeah, edit: I choose 90125 because I listen to it for more than 20 years and I still get shivers down the spine. Asia is my second favorite.

As far as I understand, this are the biggest Pop albums in the 80's by former 70's prog giants. Which one do you like better? |
90125: High quality pop with a little of prog (Changes? maybe Hearts)
Asia: Rather Good pop
Invisible Touch: High quality pop with half of the album modern prog (Domino, The Brazilian, Tonight...)
I vote for Invisible Touch, but with 90125 closer.

Have to remember that Jon Anderson was asked to join Cinema. Had Trevor and Chris (whose band it was) released 90125 under that name one wonders what would have happened to either Yes in particular, prog rock in general.
Besides any pop group whose seciond release is (The Solos) can't be bad. The only Cinema, er, Yes album I've not heard oddly...
Now what about looking at this another way. What pop album makes a prog album? Abba The Album? Kiss- The Elder? (ok they're a hard rock act but even so...)
I like what Geoff Downes recommended with Asia choices. Satrt with the first album (as I did) and stop when you get to the one you don't like, as you won't like any after that. So I stopped where I began. I ended up only liking the piano solo on... what was it on side 2? Can't remember. Had it been a double albyum with some instrumental work on it then it would've been great. Sort of feeling I get with OK Computer. Just about to get instrumental on yer ass and they stop as though wondering what the press would say...
Genesis had some great moments in the 1980s. Mainly by Spitting Image who did their vids...

| Well, perhaps you could try to listen to the new original Asia albums, I found Phoenix particularly pleasant, and they did kind of change the tipe of pop they did. And they have an amazing song, Parallel Worlds / Vortex / Deya is really beautiful (just kind of a simple pretty pop song followed by two extremely good instrumental passages, ending up at 8 min length).

Yes, I probably should. Downes' comments were a few years ago - and now they have John Wetton and Howe on board... I have been hearing positive comments. Odd considering (I had heard) Wetton and Howe did not get on - originally.
It's not that I thought they ever made bad music, just records I didn't want to hear. Hardly the same thing.
There's also a ROIO about of Asia with their only performance with Greg Lake. An MTV special.
Perhaps we could improvise on a theme by including GTR?
P.S. Sorry about my typos.

90125 is the logical answer since it's the 80's gateway for Yes.

Yes by a lot. Can't listen to Asia or Invisible Touch. It may have been pop Yes, but it was a very well done album with some decent music. Don't feel that way about the other 2.

90125 for me as well, although the others have their moments. I'm fond of Howe's guitar on Asia's "Sole Survivor" for example.
Don't forget some other prog-pop efforts of that era, including GTR and Saga! God, am I old!!

Who gives a sh*t if it has "the most prog"?
It's possible for non-prog rock to be enjoyable and listenable

Don't like Invisible Touch at all. Asia is decent but gets boring halfway through. 90125 easily blows away both put together, superb album, a very successful blend of pop appeal with prog influences.

Of the three, I've only owned two and not likely to get any of them on CD. Kind of a toss up between the Yes and Genesis.
