These bands had nothing in common with prog. Why some peoples confuse this fact, Pearl Jam, Nirvana,  Stone Temple PIlots , Alice in Chain prog????, no way. They are pure grunge, and better remain this way. Anyway I like Alice in Chains, they are by far the best band from this genre.

Black Hole Sun is prog, IMO.

I don't think that Soundgarden are suitable for inclusion, but some of their songs are prog.

I'm going with Nirvana but admittedly don't know this genre very well.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I always saw Soundgarden as the most Prog grunge band having some prog-ish songs. My Friend always said otherwise looks like I proved him wrong Big smile.

Anyway I wanted to tell you guys about the bet which I sadly lost a couple of minutes ago. I said the more melodic grunge bands, who survived after the Grunge craze died, would get the most votes, but I could only choose one band and it had to get 40% of all votes.
Two bands came to mind Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
I thought about which band I should choose for the bet ( while listening to "Ten" and "Superunknown" respectively) and foolishly chose Pearl Jam.
If I had chosen Soundgarden I would have won but you can't win 'em all I guess.

Now I have to buy that b*****d drinks for 2 weeks.
On the bright side my theory was correct , in a way. Grunge bands that diversify are the favorable ones.
Thanks Guys for voting it means a lot to us Grunge kids. Smile

Oh and keep voting maybe I can still avoid buying 4 gallons of drinks in the following 2 weeks!

Alice in Chains. They are grunge, but have flashes of heavy-prog on songs like, "I Stay Away" and "No Excuses."

The heaviest psychedelic purge coming from Seattle was the short-lived projetc Temple of the Dog.
Soundgarden + Pearl Jam / Mother Love Bone = TotD.

After all, one of their song lasted 11 minutes - they had it hard and long overcoming the grief over the death of Andrew Wood.

I demand Soundgarden (Superunknown) and Pearl Jam (Ten) to be the most prog related bands listed here Smile

I picked Soundgarden. Green River and Mudhoney are the roots......Nirvana should not even be considered grunge, they were pop music loved by MTV and FM radio......Cobain is a doosh.

Alice In Chains, hard metal......Pearl Jam like em a lot...but I struggle calling them hardcore grunge...pop rock music probably in my book.

I don't consider Tool 'grunge' myself, but there you go.

Yeah, Adam Jones (Tool) is pretty good friends with Tom Morello (RAtM).  I believe they were in a band together long ago, called the Electric Sheep, I believe.

These are all Melvins tracks. Just look at the duration of the songs. I stand by my vote. The most Prog Related grunge band are absolutely The Melvins. Not a traditional Prog act, but surely the most experimental of the grunge ones.

Well, the right question should be: "Is there such a thing as "grunge rock"?"
I vaguely remember some interviews by Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder and many others saying: "No". Some even add: "that's bullsh*t from a bunch of a****le musical journalists who don't know f**king sh*t about rock".

More or less.

After all, I also remember some critics adding L7 or Sonic Youth to the Grunge train...

To me they are a Sludge Metal band. But you know, they come from Seattle and reached their peak of popularity in the 90's, so, as many other Seattle bands they were labelled grunge. Plus, they were a big influence for some Grunge bands sound (for example, Nirvana's debut Bleach).

Ermmm.
Grunge is a genres made by a bunch of playboys that wanted to be punk. But they didn't know nothing about anarchy and rebelion, so they just play punk's easy riffs with sort of melancholy (just to make something "new"). In the end, they are still a bunch of playboys

Queensryche are from Seattle ergo they are grunge Ermm eh NO.

my favouritte are Soundgarden, the most obscure of the big four and most experimental and most technical and complex and were also one of the founders of grunge (together with Green River, Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone) they also in the meantime lead down the foundation for Stooner metal (which were made into a genere by Kyuss) they are also said to be the first Alternative metal band.

Badmotorfinger and Superunkown are both technical onslought of fearouchious metal with a punky attitude and psychadelic  undertones.

I used to be into Grunge, but I haven't listened to the genre in a few years... I would pick Pearl Jam, though.  Nirvana should never be picked for anything ever, except maybe the most overrated band of all time.

I guess Alice in Chains can fall under grunge.

But gunna go classic.

Definitely Alice in Chains is the proggiest grunge band.

The blending of hard and soft music, all the work with acoustic guitars...
They're probably my favorite non-prog band too.

I agree. Undertow was a great grunge album and very proggy.
But since its not an option I'll go with soundgarden, I mean they have a song with someone playing the spoons. Whats not prog about that? LOL

Plus they played in 7 a lot.  Definitely a prog affectation.
