Hello!
I am seeking some xylophone/vibraphone oriented prog, preferably fusion. What engaged me into this search is, well, Pierre Moerlen's Gong, which made some beautiful jazzy-rock tunes with that sweet vibraphone and xylophone sound. Thanks for all the recommendations.

Frank Zappa utilizes these a lot... and Marimbas - check out Apostrophe (') and Roxy and Elsewhere.

Unitopia's "The Garden" (the song) has a sweet marimba solo at the start...

I can't think of much else... it's definitely an underused set of instruments.

Bobby Hutcherson's Cirrus is fantastic.

EDIT for samples (the first five are from Cirrus).

http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B000VSBXAM#

He's one of the greatest vibraphone/ marimba player/ composers in jazz. And I would recommend Cirrus to those who enjoy JRF.

Aisha Duo.

Not really prog . . . more like soft Jazz. I really dig it, though. You may, also.

Maneige has a few marimba passages here and there,.. I'd reccomend their album "Ni Vent... Ni Nouvelle"

Magma's latest album has lots of vibraphone, but, evidently, not very audible in their amazing wall of sound. But if you're attentive you can catch it; IMO it enriches the atmosphere and it's a nice addition to their sound.

Wow, this really sounds great (I really enjoy jazz, so that may be it). Thanks very much, and thanks to everyone else - all recommendations are safe on the list =). And if there are any more bands with vibraphones and xylophones - keep them coming!

Some Gentle Giant and Magma has prominent mallet-work

I know lots of things that have vibes and am furiously racking my brain but to no avail.  When I remember I'll post

Here's some particullarly amazing mallet-work. It's amazing. I'm suprised anyone can play that fast... it seems like a very difficult instrument to play.

Jaga Jazzist's albums are full of vibraphone (and other related instruments), just don't expect ethereal vibraphone sounds or solos, they're a nu-jazz band so the wall of sound is very thick, they have at least 7-8 instruments playing simultaneously all the time. You'll recognize it in many moments of the samples bellow, if you're used to spot its sound.

Not Prog, but Gary Burton is the man when it comes to vibraphone. He plays mostly jazz, you can find some of his works collaborating with Chick Corea and Pat Metheny, two other masters of jazz/fusion.

Beat me to it.  Gary Burton da man.  Ruth Underwood da woman.
Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.
