Nursery Cryme: Phillips or Hackett?

   I remember reading somewhere that Anthony Phillips left Genesis during the middle of the recording sessions for Nursery Cryme, but some of his recorded guitar parts remained on the album. Does anybody know for sure whether any of Anthony Phillips guitar parts made it onto Nursery Cryme? If so, which songs feature his guitar? Or is it all Steve Hackett?

	I seriously doubt it. As far as I've ever known its Hackett.

	I read that Phillips wrote some of the guitar parts, but I think Hackett performed all of them

	Hi, I would imagine that the "basis" for some of the songs were already there. However, Steve's presence made the songs come off a lot more rock oriented, is my take on it. Anthony has a lot of work, and for the most part, he can do rock really well, but his main interest might not have been "rock music" as defined by radio ... Steve brought the rock edge to the band that was not quite there, and that made the band more accessible and a better (some think) option for the audiences in those days. Rock music was still in its "heyday" in radio ... but Genesis was a darling on the FM waves, NOT in hit radio. The long cuts and far out stuff helped tremendously, and FM radio in those days was not just another hit station out there! At least in America! Edited by moshkito - August 17 2010 at 13:55

	Phillips did indeed come up with parts of "The Musical Box". Parts of this can be heard on his demo recording simply titled "F#". He also was a part of the early prototype for "The Fountain Of Salmacis", which can be heard on the "Jackson Tapes". But the bulk of Nursery Cryme was most definitely written after his departure. Hackett's writing contributions were largely to "Seven Stones", "Hogweed" and "For Absent Friends", as well as minor additions to "Musical Box" and of course his solo at the end of "Salmacis".
