Just as a flutist, Ian Anderson's characteristic style impresses me more.

THIJS is correct, for order.
And my choice too!
(Because Í like Symphonic more than Prog Folk.)

This is really absurd.
Thijs is formally trained wheras Ian is self taught on the instrument. Both have completely different approaches. Anderson doesn't even really know who Thijs van Leer is. Also, both are multi instrumentalists. As much as I like Ian's playing Thijs definitely has more depth. If you're familiar with his Introspection albums from the 70s. Ian is more of a showman and really flaunts the instrument wheras Thijs just plays it. I can't vote in this poll because both are great players in their own individual ways. |

It's a hard one. Both are great flutists in their own approach. But I just like Thijs better.

I much prefer Ian's style, though Van Leer is an incredible player. I also find Ian's solos to be more interesting.
Also, does anyone else know of any bands with great flutists? I'm a flute player myself and I'd like to gather as much flute music as possible. Edited by Zombywoof - August 18 2010 at 11:56 |

I made a thread called "Best Prog Rock Flautist" a while ago. Search for that. |

I recommend byron's first album, Forbidden Drama. Lots of tasty flute on that. Both their albums are free downloads, check them out here: Byron's albums now available as Free Downloads! . |

Andy Latimer of Camel was a good flautist too.
I can't really judge who is the technically better player. I like both musicians and both bands. I generally prefer Tulls music, but I wont vote on band preference. |

Thisj's playing is more studied and technically correct. Ian Anderson, however, not knowing the "correct" way to play, developed his own style. He is one of those artists who got away with playing things "wrong" because it just sounded so good. His playing has improved over the years as well - he is much better now than he was in the early days.

Even though I much prefer Focus to Jethro Tull, I much prefer Ian Anderson to Thijs van Leer as a flautist. Just a matter of taste.

Thijs van Leer is professionally trained; he's a far superior player to Ian Anderson, though Anderson is an exciting player if a bit crude at times. But Jim Lockhart of Horslips is equally as good as van Leer. |

The first time I heard the flute in "Hocus Pocus", I fell out of my seat.
However, technicality very rarely beat feeling...and you can't beat Ian on the flute when it comes to feeling, amirite?
