I just joined this forum, and was extremely suprised that there were none posts (or at least i couldn't find one) of this band. Is it just because it's not prog enough or is it too underground?:D. Anyway, its genre is something that might be called progressive hardrock. Opinions?

It's because the "heavy prog" fans only seems to listen to Rush.

I'm a fan of Captain Beyond

Captain Beyond are great.  I enjoy their debut, and I'm absolutely nuts over Sufficiently Breathless (Confession: I'll even toss on Dawn Explosion once in a while, if I'm in a silly mood).  One of the more ill-fated supergroups.  They should definitely be more well known. Unhappy

There's undoubtedly some older threads about them.

Captain Beyond is the very definition of a lost classic.

I myself love the alboums sufficiently breathless and captain beyond (hard to say which one is better, they're just too different for that). The music on dawn explosion would be rather good, but I just cannot stop hating Willy Dafferns voice Confused

I haven't actually looked "Captain Beyond" up in the PA archives so I don't know if they are considered "Prog" here - but I too am most fond of them.  I discovered them as they came out on the original vinyl and gobbled up their first two albums as soon as I could.  I too often think of them as a perfect example of "obscure"!

I saw Captain Beyond open for Golden Earring. I thought they were better than the headliner.
btw - another early 70's band I don't see much around here is Jade Warrior.  Some of their better stuff sounds like Wetton-era King Crimson.

Cristi bumped the thread.........Big smile

I think they have been talked about here several times but the first album is a winner for anyone who likes progressive hard rock....great playing, melodies, and singing by Rod Evans.....who of course was the first singer for Deep Purple. Sadly their next two albums were not nearly as good......
The first album on vinyl with the hologram cover is a must own.

That old question, "Is it prog?, can certainly be applied to Capt Beyond......great debut album, strong second and curious third.  I don't consider them prog, just a great American rock band (on the Capricorn label.....think US blues rock/southern rock....Allmans, Marshall Tucker, Outlaws, Wet Willie, Elvin Bishop, even the Dregs!).

The first album is a must for any collection (great album cover), but I like the rest of them too.

Well...they are indeed considered 'heavy prog' by our esteemed collaborators when they were added.
But then people are always second guessing their decisions.
Wink

And imho they don't sound anything like Tucker, Outlaws, Wet Willie, Bishop ,or the Dregs.....though there is a resemblance to 'some  of the music' the Allmans did.

I actually just listened to 'Sufficiently Breathless' after having their debut in my collection for years. I was a little disappointed in the more straightforward songwriting. It's a little sad they never got the recognition that I think they deserve.

Classic Rock Magazine have an article up on Captain Beyond, which I'm extremely grateful as it presents quite a bit of obscure information on their career trajectory and how the entire project came to be. Right down to the band name apparently coming from a sarcastic remark of Yes' Chris Squire to Larry Reinhardt?

I first learned about Captain Beyond while reading an interview with Doug Pinnock from Kings X. He mentioned how much he liked the Captain Beyond debut album. I knew I had to find a copy. I did, and was blown away.

I haven't listened to any of the subsequent albums

Yeah, that was a great article. I was shocked to see that Steve Perry auditioned for the band. Imagine if he got the gig.

Actually, not sure I can imagine that.

Steve Perry.....perish the thought.  Wink
Btw....the second album is ok but not as strong as the first. I would also investigate an album called Armageddon,  and Metamorphisis by Iron Butterfly ...both have a connection.
