I think he's a prog artist or a proto-prog artist since he influenced a lot of prog artists.

I like Steve and have a few albums.  He's more modern classical to me, but classical buffs may have another classification.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

He's maybe classical but he inspired a lot of prog rockers like Frank Zappa.

We've talked about adding minimalist composers like Reich, Riley and Glass before, but I think the general feeling has always been against it. They really belong to the realm of modern classical, not prog rock.

They are modern classical. There's little to absolutely no "rock" in their music.

There is no rock in the music of Terry Riley yet he is hear.

I'm playing "music for pieces of wood" in Percussion ensemble. None of the parts are hard by themselves but together I get lost so fast, unless I play the straight 8th note part.

actually Reich has several excellent rock-oriented works like 'Electric Guitar Phase' from Reich:Triple Quartet, Music for a Large Ensemble, Electric Guitar Phase - -

I'm not saying these works are a reason to add him, but they may be a good starting point for some Prog fans
