About accents, São Paulo countryside's is something of incredible... But, 'orra meu', if a poll was made back here for the catchiest accent, 'carioquês' (from Rio de Janeiro) would easily win. Every time I go there, even for a few days, I come back speaking the damn thing fluently.

You mean 'podishshcrê', for sure!!

For Gods sake, is it not enough for it to be just an accent... does it really need to be catchy too?

Not that the accent itself is annoying, but what's up with the pseudo-southern "red neck" accent? It exists everywhere in the United States. You can speak like a network news anchor, and a person who grew up a mile away can sound like a Hillbilly.

What's an American accent?  Over here we consider the British to have an accent in the English language, is it the same the other way around?

It's interesting that the creator of the poll thinks that only England has regional accents, the rest are all national (except Texans who for some reason are differentiated from the "Americans" in the other 49 States.)

There are many distinct accents in Canada, and in America too.

There is no such thing as a generic "Canadian" or "American" accent, just as there is no single "British" accent. (Accents even vary within provinces, states, cities, etc.)

Anyway, everyone on earth has some sort of accent, and I don't find any of them to be "irritating." (Some might be harder for me to understand than others, but there is no "proper" way to speak. We say "standard" English, not "proper" these days. Two Cockneys or two Jamaicans, for example, understand each other perfectly -- there is nothing "wrong" with the way they speak. In the world of academic writing, however, "standard" English is required to facilitate broad, cross-border understanding.)

This poll has a rather arrogant premise, IMO. Any "failure" lies with the uncomprehending listener -- not the speaker.Stern Smile

Why are people 'irritated" by accents, anyway? Just stay home if you can't handle the fact that people speak differently in different areas.

Accents and differences are facts of life -- deal with it!Stern Smile

(I think I see some hints of xenophobia/racism in some of the responses here.)

Hooray for diversity!

there really isn't anything worse than a scouse accent; it's a perpetual whine like they have a permanent gripe against the world...Pinch

...whoops, that'll be me following Boris Johnson up the M6 to make an official apology on BBC Radio Liverpool, tomorrow morning...Embarrassed
