This recent vocal is lovely and feels like a goodbye.  Check out the look on his face during the break about half way through.  I don't play Phil solo stuff much, but I'll miss the guy too if he stays retired.

He's probably upset about the hipsters celebrating Phil Collins day

Some quotes from him
]
Quote "I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think: 'I can't be in the same business as this',"

Quote "I don't really belong to that world and I don't think anyone's going to miss me. I'm much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.

"I'll go on a mysterious biking holiday and never return. That would be a great way to end the story, wouldn't it?"

He claims that it was this success and the overplaying of his music which made people "want to strangle" him.
Quote "It's hardly surprising that people grew to hate me. I'm sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn't mean it to happen like that,"

Yeah. He sounds pretty damned depressed.

This is terrible news.  He makes it sound like he's in major pain too from his statement.

It was about time.

I was already sure the band would never reunite except the pathetic trio.

I wish the best for Phil, and hope his ears and hands get better, but I won't miss his music or him as a singer.

Hard but honest

Iván

Dunno, as a solo artist he was still like Elton John: you could tell which Disney-tunes were his and which ones not. I'm going to miss his contributions. But it's true what he says, there's no place for his ballads in the mainstream world of today :(

However, for me he did much better pop music than the one that is being done nowdays.

This is very sad. And he indeed sounds depressed...

Anyways, has there been any official announcement? I can't find anything on his official site.

Anyways, he will really be missed.

Amazing, as you say at the break it's like he is in the zone, a moment of clarity or quiet resignation

Brr. I found that harrowing.
By the quotes posted in here, I'd really like it if he had a long talk with someone Unhappy

I guess this is the official, official release from Phil.......I just read the CNN post on this. I agree, before coming here he did sound very disappointed with what he now hears and sees on MTV and probably Grammy award shows. I also hear undertones of depression...hopefully that is just a sign of retiring...but I agree with all.

I am not surprised if there is depression, I mean he made his living playing drums and singing...he can't play drums anymore and with hearing issues probably has difficult time singing comfortably...What else does he have?

Hopefully he will at least continue to write music and maybe produce for other artists.......in time.

I hope all the best for him....this is one band I never got to see live and is one I will always regret not seeing!!

This man is not depressed. He's been in the studio, released an album, touring, doing interviews while looking in good shape. He has a strong ego/personality and better be saying what he is saying to align with reality. And, he's got a strong sense of humour.

Just read some new news---His  people just announced he IS NOT retiring ---he is on a hiatus and will return---he needs a long rest to heal and be with his kids----so, the  statement he made was some kind of misunderstanding---or some kind of mistake.
