Hi,

I really think that "Mirage" is more important and made it for the band ... but it was "Moonmadness" that got them to America big time ... and as such that album becomes more important and was a bigger seller.

I got "Mirage" as an import, and it was not released in America, as far as I can remember. "Moonmadness" was the first American release and it went big enough to make it ... more accessible and appreciated on this side of the ocean. However, I think that "Mirage" is the nicer of the two albums, but both are really nice ... and it is almost too hard to decide.

As far as I can tell, and Santa Barbara, no one had heard Camel, except Guy, myself and 5 other people maybe, until "Moonmadness" showed up at the station and one gorilla put it on the turntable and spoke about it like he had just found "Camel" ... the great new band! Yeah ... no kidding! By that time I already had their first album as well, and "Never Let Go" was played a lot ... a LOT ... and it still is my Camel "theme" ... until "Snow Goose" ...
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Equal in my mind. I'd have Snow Goose higher than both.

Even with differences the first four albums are on the same level.

Equal or not - surely too hard to decide which brilliant shines more brightly.

I believe that Mirage is their best album.
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

Definitely Mirage, especially for "Nimrodel", though Snow Goose is my favourite Camel studio album, and A Live Record is my overall favourite Camel album.  I find Moonmadness quite dull overall -- though it has good music on it.

I've always considered Moonmadness one of the top 5 albums of the 70's.

Definitely Moon Madness, though both are great.

Moonmadness was the swan song of Mr. Doug Ferguson, and I'd like to think it was at least his best album before departing. For that reason - MOONMADNESS!

Where Moonmadness has a Brazilian wax texture to it - Mirage goes in the other direction and hits you in the head with hairy and fuzzy balls. I prefer the latter.

Moonmadness is one of the best albums that I heard in my life. I voted for that album.

But... Mirage is very good too. Also a very strong Camel album.
