Celebrated astrophysicist and musician Brian May is reported to be recording a song with Tangerine Dream and dedicated to the Soviet Cosmonaut.

Brian May, the guitarist from British rock group Queen, is recording a song dedicated to Soviet Cosmonaut Yury Gagarin, who became the first man to fly into space 50 years ago on Tuesday. May, who also has a doctorate degree in astrophysics, is recoding the song in cooperation with German electronic music group Tangerine Dream, a spokesman for the festival said. The song will be debuted at the Starmus science and music festival on the Spanish island of Tenerife between June 20 and 25. The group will also record a second song dedicated to Soviet Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, the first man to carry out a space walk. Both songs will be based on “cosmic” sounds, the spokesman said. Other musicians are considering joining the initiative, he added\

The festival, which is being held in celebration of the Gagarin anniversary, is expected to be attended by the first female cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, and a number of prominent NASA astronauts, including Buzz Aldrin, who carried out the first manned lunar landing.”

Anyways, very interesting!

It's kind of hard to qualify what "cosmic sounds" means withtin the context of Tangerine Dream, but I'm all for swirling atmospherics. I do love their most recent albums, especially The 5 Atomic Seasons, but I do admit those were more "Tangram" and less "Force Majeure". I'd love more albums of the latter vein.

I'm imagining an even better corollary to The Orb's collaboration with David Gilmour last year.
