If his voice was damaged, then it makes sense for him to leave unless the band wants to continue in a musical vain to suit his voice.
Otherwise, get someone with the same previous vocal capactiy and if wanting to continue in the same musical vain, ensure the person agrees with it

It comes to me as no surprise, mainly due to the fact that his voice was damaged recently...you can tell by the way he sings on their last album. Oh well...now my hopes for a second "Black Halo" have grown a bit thinner.

While, i really have not listened to them much in the last few years I have to say that Kamelot will not be the same without him.
His vocals made the band what it was, and allowed them to stand above a lot of power metal.
