Ommadawn is far superior...except its more inconsistent because part 2 is pretty crappy
Yet part 1 makes up for it because its some of the best music ive ever heard. The amazing build up to the climax at the end of the piece and the melodies are just brilliant.

Part 2 starts with some distorted sounds (backwards tape?) ,but to me its like a fog clearing and giving way to a warm clear day.If that's a ''crappy'' peice then everyone else might as well give up!

I was about to say Ommadawn but then surprised myself by realising that I actually prefer Amarok.

Amarok was originally intended to be released as 'Ommadawn Pt2' apparently.MO thought of it that way. Both are great albums IMO but on Amarok MO suffers from the need to be humourous just to avoid being tagged ''pretentious''.That is the only thing that (slightly) spoils it.Still much music on there to be enjoyed and admired all the same.Ommadawn is actually my favourite instrumental album by anyone (not just Mike Oldfield). |
Richard H has made a good point regarding the presence of humour in the "Amarok" album. May I add that there are, at least, two reasons for it: Oldfield was pleased to learn that the Thatcher-era was reaching an end, and also, Oldfield had become a sworn enemy (after breaking up the friendship) to Virgin Records frontman Richard Branson. The sense of humour was used to scorn about these two guys, mostly, but of course, there was a third reason for humour: the happiness of getting rid of the woman (as a British citizen) and of the man (as a contracted musician). I personally find those humorou scolours quite amusing, which add some Dadaist bizarreness to the diverse provided by the well-crafted music.
Regards.

Just an opinion but whereas I loved Ommadawn (moves me to tears!) I
find Amarok to be self indulgent twaddle! Ommadawn is my
favourite Mike Oldfield album.

Amarok; closely followed by Tubular Bells 3. I also liked his live album Exposed.

I think I have to go with Ommadawn, although Amarok is probably my #2 Oldfield album. Both exceptionally good.

I love both! Desert Island album? I'd have to say Ommadawn ... but I'd be annoyed at the lack of Amarok nonetheless.
That and Hergest Ridge. I'm please someone mentioned it up there; it was really, really good, and is as well-constructed as Ommadawn is. Except instead of as in Ommadawn, parts 1 and 2 actually correlate to each other musically.

They are, not that they mean anything . Mike's a fan of 'word painting' - as is Vangelis, I believe? - and indulges more frequently in random syllables that sound word-esque. But they're rarely words, and if they are, they aren't likely to mean anything. He mentioned in an interview once that he wants you to focus on the music itself, not on the lyrics.
But that withstanding, at the time he just told Clodagh Simmonds to improvise some words. She ended up singing nonsense Gaelic - and roughly translated it means "the cat is in the kitchen drinking milk; I'm a fool and I'm laughing" - 'ommadawn' meaning fool.
