Safe as Milk. Some damn good blues on that one.

Clear Spot.  One of his more easily accessible albums, but also great songs.
Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

I love Clear Spot so much. It should have been the long-awaited commercial breakthrough - accessible enough not to frighten, produced to the nines, yet still maintaining a delicious level of the idiosyncratic. Long Necked Bottles and Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles and Clear Spot itself - I get tingles just thinking about it. I don't think it's any surprise that the Captain lost his way for several years following its release; what do you do after you've recorded the perfect record, and no one gave a damn?

I see necrobumping is becoming a fad these days, so I thought I'd give it a shot myself:-P

Today I would have to go for Safe as Milk. 1967, deconstructed rhythm n blues, zany electronics, spilonking guitars and a frenzied raspy mumbling man. This album was progressive for it's day, make no mistake about that.
I know I voted for Trout Mask, and it is still my fave, but this morning was all about the debut.

I own every album on the list .....but some can be challenging especially 'Trout' ,and it  surprises me it received so many votes.
My friend Bill is an unofficial Beefheart 'expert' and I think he might pick 'Spotlight Kid' but I prefer 'Clear Spot' ,but then there are several I like equally well. 'Crow' and 'Doc' are also very good...as are Mirror Man and Decals.
The only one I don't play much anymore is Trout....makes my ears bleed and my head spin. Wink

My favourite thing about Trout Mask is the fact that it makes my head spin. Potatoe potatoe:-P

When I last posted in this thread 3 years ago, I was unwilling to commit to a favorite.  Since then, I've written some reviews of Beefheart albums, and in doing so I finally arrived at an "official" favorite, and that would be Doc at the Radar Station.  Plenty of his albums are 4-stars, but Doc was the only one I'd give 5.

I'd give 5 stars to Clear Spot simply for the track Big Eyed Beans From Venus....

I only have Trout Mask and Mirror Man, and I much prefer MM, and I can't believe it was recorded in 1965 (so it says on the back of the LP cover)..
Used to have Bluejeans And Moonbeams but wasn't sold on it, ditched it after a few listens.

I recommend you try Clear Spot....it's accessible but still has that classic Beefheart weirdness.

^ I keep a look out for Beefheart albums at record fairs but they're hard to come by, especially in top condition.

Today I'd vote for Shiny Beast.
The original soundtrack music for looking round the fridge for food, when you're not hungry.

Funny how Beefheart took lots of drugs, Zappa didn't - how comes they worked so well together ??

I think Zappa was attracted to the madness and altogether wild side of Beefy. He was no hippie, and he had wits, seriously strange wits fuelled by all kinds of drugs yes, but I think it was the man himself that drew Zappa in.

Trout Mask Replica

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.
