I'm looking for recommendations of bands that play a heavier, more guitar-orientated side of space-rock, psych/punk etc. The kind of bands I'm thinking of are those that emerged from the UK festival scene in the 80s and 90s, inspired by Hawkwind and Ozric Tentacles. One of my alltime favourite bands is Crow from Whitstable, Kent, who were active in the early 90s (recently reformed again). I've spent years looking for bands that play music in a similar vein as them:

Crow

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDzAFEJzQTk
(one of their heavier tracks)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lg40lwzOiA (more tribal ambient/psych)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7OD-nmSj-M (more dynamic prog-rock)

http://www.myspace.com/crowwhitstable
http://www.mrgig.com/crow

Other similar bands:

Moondragon
(a very good example of the style I'm after)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92zAMHUldZM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CB-zoxepfs

Paperhouse (not as punky, but similar)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZ2XuWD4y5Q

Other bands in the vague style:

Here & Now
Omnia Opera
Mandragora
Dead Flowers
Sons Of Selina
Ship Of Fools

More recent bands I've just discovered are Electric Moon, their style is fairly close:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP2msvW_GwQ

Also Litmus is pretty good, though a tad too Hawkwind-obsessed.

I have already been recommended Mr. Quimby's Beard, Helios Creed, Hidria Spacefolk, Underground Zero, Spacemen 3 and Sleepy People, but none of these were really what I was after.

So, over to you guys; give me your recommendations of any crusty tribal/space/psych/prog/dub/punk bands! The more obscure/underground, the better!

^ From their excellent 2011 release

^ if you like them, both their album are up for free on bandcamp: http://luger.bandcamp.com/

^ I recommend that album

^ from their last album (2010)

^ less punky and rhythm-based, but very heavy on the guitars

Also you might like THIS. No punk and not a lot of guitar, but very strong on the Ozric Tentacles side, plus a lot of electronic beats, world fusion, etc.

And finally, an older band that you might know, Cul De Sac. They were mixing in the 90s Neu/Can-style krautrock and Ozric Tentacles-like psych/space in a context of experimental alternative/post-punk:

Let me know what you thought of these recommendations.

Porcupine Tree from the early 90's is exactly what you're looking for. Also, try Motorpsycho; Heavy Metal Fruit is a nice place to start.

Thanks for the recs. Sorry Polo, I should have said I know Porcupine Tree, I first saw them supporting Ozrics back in about 95.

Harmonium.ro: based on a quick listen, Pyramid Of The Sun is superb! Just the sort of thing I'm after, I'm a sucker for those delayed guitar lines! The Egocentrics sound excellent too. Mugstar wasn't bad, but the first two bands weren't really the sort of thing I'm after. I'll have a closer listen when I have more time though.

Cul De Sac was pretty damn good too, in a different way. No, I hadn't encountered them before.

Thanks again, keep those recs coming!

Just had a quick check on all three, they all sound pretty interesting in their own ways. Quantum Fantay seem VERY Ozricy, possibly a bit TOO much! Mammatus sound much more doom-orientated, a scene I like as well. And Long Distance Calling seem much more post-rock based, which again is cool, but not really what I'm looking for here.

However, in time I will probably be investigating all those bands in more detail. Thanks for bringing them to my attention!

Cool. It's interesting that The Psychic Paramount and Luger weren't what you were interested in, because they're great examples of psych-punk. But it's true they have no connection to the Ozric sound. Maserati do a good mix of both these sounds, indeed. For Cul De Sac you can safely try any of their albums, they're all very good/excellent.

If you liked the stoner sound of The Egocentrics, do try Samsara Blues Experiment. I'll also back up the recommendation for Motorpsycho, but I'd recommend the album Little Lucid Moments instead.

And don't forget to check Tunderground, for which I gave a link. ;)

Getting a lot of stoner-orientated recommendations; Samsara Blues Experiment were OK, a bit messy for my liking. Earthless was better, but there's only so much jamming I can handle - I like a bit more structure.

Maserati is without doubt the best rec so far. I downloaded that album last night, and it's awesome. I shall definitely be purchasing a copy as soon as possible.

@ Harmonium.ro: It is possible that I'm using the term "psych-punk" incorrectly; it may have a more specific meaning than I'm aware of. Perhaps "space-punk" is a more appropiate term. That first Moondragon link is more or less the sound I envisaged.

What I've heard of Amplifier hasn't grabbed me much for some reason, but I'll try and take a closer listen.

Thanks Cannon. The best of that bunch was Farflung, especially the first track. I'll be checking them out for sure.

Failure is a band I've been meaning to check out for a while, they seem to have more of an Alt-Rock feel to them, which is good.

I'm getting a lot of recs for fairly established bands, especially recent ones. I'm particularly (but not exclusively) interested in older bands that never made international recognition, maybe only establishing a local following (like Crow or Moondragon). The kind of bands that used to knock about in village halls in the 80s/90s, playing to about 20 people!

Hey, Harmonium.ro, I've just checked out that Mugstar album, and while it's not the sort of sound I was after in this thread, it's great nonetheless! It has a vague Noxagt/Shellac noise-rock feel in places. Thanks again! :-)

Yes, they were cool in a more mellow, spacey way. Certainly very interesting. Cheers!
