At first I thought it was going to be something like actors who actually act vs. ones who are just themselves pretty much, but being recorded.

Have to go with those who act.

It's just...better LOL
Not saying they aren't good but I usually dislike those who have the same role every time.
Even if I like them, Ricky Gervais is one that comes to mind, I do get kinda bored seeing the same shtick every time.

Adam Sandler is usually horrendous but I kind of like him. The movies where he's at are usually sh*t but the guy has something that makes me not hate him 100%

Ben Stiller, though, I totally loathe. Nothing like his father.

I only know Ben Stiller.Who is is father?

If you watched Seinfeld, George's father. I think he also appeared in the King of Queens ?

Which category does Tom Hanks fall into? I've never been able to be sure...

I'd say: Awesome.

He's probably my favorite.

I think he's pretty diverse. I mean as a character guess he's always kind of the same but certainly has played a variety of roles.

Kilmer's okay; Top Secret, The Doors, and the one about John Holmes.  Pretty good range.

Hanks has come a long way from his comedian days on Bosom Buddies, but on the other hand that's when he was at his best--  I'd have to say he's an ActorsWhoAre.  I mean is there much difference between the guy he played in Apollo 13, the guy he played in Sleepless in Seattle, the guy he played in Castaway, and the guy he played in DaVinci Code?   Best film he did IMO was The Money Pit .

Johnny Depp is a decent actor but I wouldn't put him in the first category.  He just plays a weirdo in every film.  While they may read different on paper he basically acts the same in every one of his films.  Not his fault, just wouldn't say any of his roles are actually stretches over previous roles.

Can we get some love for character actors?  The Stephen Roots and Charles Napiers of the world that are down there in the trenches, holding the films together, so that the "stars" can shine.

Time always wins.

well, yeah, but that was more of a 'performance', and not particularly great one, he's never really done what I would call a truly genuine portrayal, e.g. Stallone in Rocky or Mark Hamill in Episode 4

Isn't that kinda pulling gnat sh*t from pepper?  One could say the same of DeNiro's portrayals of Jake LaMotta and Al Capone, but it's the subtleties that count.
