Maybe you don't know him or maybe you dislike him, but his observations had a very profound effect on me 2-4 years ago. I was hoping he'd last longer. I would say, "Good luck," but....well...you know.

Thank you.

Don't know him, sounds honestly like the kind of person I usually dislike, the "bad" kind of atheist (and how on Earth can you "savage Mother Theresa"??)  though I gotta respect his supposed "views that did not fit comfortably with the conventional right or left".

Hey, least he had a different view on things, and certainly seems...steadfast in supporting his beliefs.
62 is young to go.

Considering that Mother Theresa housed people in terrible conditions and denied medical care to those who were dying of treatable diseases, I'd say it was pretty fair.

One of my intellectual heroes.

He was certainly better than his annoying brother Peter Hitchens, it has to be said.

I don't agree with everything he says and much like Brian, I think his antitheist thoughts (although I agree with them) were a bit preachy, he should still be respected.

And nobody should have to suffer from Cancer.  62 is far too young.

Hero to all the cynical b*****ds eh?Tongue
Even if you agree, and I kind of do, just seemed like an incredibly arrogant and wound up person. I question how someone can truly be happy with their life in such a manner. I do think he was not so much concerned with even being "right" or trying to open eyes, more like feeding an ego...maybe to be satisfied. Which is kind of sad honestly.

Reading up real briefly (and too quick I'm sure) can't say I disagree with some of his political positions, or at least the over arching principles...

Like I said, a different thinker and that I can always appreciate, and just because someone has a holier than thou attitude doesn't mean they are wrong, let me say.
RIP man

Don't know what to say.  So long.  I've been reading his editorials for many years.  Didn't always agree with him.  Kind of surprised I heard it here first.

For those who don't know, he was generally considered to be on the left politically but actually came out in support of the Iraq war.

I can't say I agree with everything he said, or disagree with him either, but he certainly had the capacity to make people think, and more importantly, to encourage them think for themselves.

There are litterally hundreds of videos and essays by him on the interweb, this I feel is an apt one:

I got to know who he was when I used to watch the Bill Maher show (yes, I used to do it ). The guy was a little arrogant and I never liked how he presented his positions. But he tried to open others' eyes to his views, and I agreed with some of them.

RIP

Here is his final piece, where he discusses his life's end.  It's quite an article.

Although I disagreed with him on many issues, I had some time for the guy, because he wasn't bound to any petty political affiliation. He upset both the left and right in equal measure.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I liked and followed him a lot more when he was younger before he seemed to shift politically and became rather, I thought, nastier, but sad.
