Trains will always be worthy of getting obsessed with.

Oh that is indeed a possibility, and given his recent facebook comments about us, a very distinct possibility...

Thought it was a joke - continuing of a word game.

But even so, maybe he is still stalking here, account-less.

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

I think it's something to do with being physically someplace, but mentally you're somewhere much different. I think most people can relate to that. I'm not just talking about "Oh, whoops - you've caught me daydreaming".
I mean you're on a whole other plane.
It's a lyrical theme, if you wanna be technical. Wilson employs them quite often. You pick up on it a lot the more you listen to his work.

Short on ideas?  Or maybe thinking the same thing all the time?  Stuck in a rut?

The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

All that redundancy, the hurry-up-and-wait, listening to the same measure of music hundreds of times, frustrating soundchecks, answering the same tired questions in interviews, more sitting around and waiting, crappy food and shady hotels, playing in a different city every night to crowds that start to all look the same.

I imagine doing that nonstop for a decade or longer could really mess with a persons head, likely leading to feelings of disconnection from the rest of the world, and worse, losing who you are as a person.

Telling yourself that you are "not here" may be the only way to cope with such horror for so long.

To quote the great Bob Dylan:

I think it's just a vague phrase that depressed teenagers in search of an identity can relate to.

Sounds like a lyrical theme that he likes to implement. A lot of artists have certain unique ideas that they're really fond of and put in their lyrics. In Steven Wilson's case, I guess its the idea of a person existing, yet not truly existing, or at least in his view of what it means to exist as a human being (a view I agree with on a lot of points). Thus the first person narrative speaking "I'm not here" even though they're the person saying it, and thus would logically be where they are at the moment of saying it, but ironically they themselves are void of the things that make human existence different from any other kind of existence, namely beauty and possessing an intrigue of the world around us as humans.

Or its just a clever-sounding thing to say. Tongue
The human heart instrinsically longs for that which is true, good, and beautiful. This is why timeless music is never without these qualities.
