I have no idea about a prog one, but I had this jazz band in mind for a long time:
Thelonious Monk - piano John Coltrane - tenor and soprano saxes Miles Davis - trumpet Charles Mingus - bass Max Roach (or Art Blakey) - drums With Eric Dolphy as a guest on flute for additional awesomeness.
Never gonna happen since all of these musicians have passed away, but one can dream. Even if they were alive though, I highly doubt they would be able to play together. Monk, Miles and Mingus would for sure get in a fight.

Not Brubeck on Piano? Not Buddy Rich on Drums? |
I love Brubeck too, but Monk takes the cake for me personally. The high priest of Bop after all. As for Buddy Rich, I'm simply not familiar enough with him (yet).

Keyboards - Jordan Rudess. Wicked Keyboardist! Keyboards (Yes there's another one) - Rick Wakeman. One of my personal favorites! Bass + Vocals - Geddy Lee. Can't beat the guy! Bass - Chris Squire. A must-have! Drums - Phil Collins. Yes, you're a horrible singer but your drumming's nothing to sneer at! Drums - Neil Peart. Come on, you don't think I wouldn't include the best drummer that I've ever heard? Guitar - Robert Fripp. A Legend! Guitar - Brian May. Be a sin not to let him on here! Guitar (yet another) - Alex Lifeson. Much respect for him. Guitar (seemingly endless) - Steve Hackett Vocalist - Jon Anderson Vocalist - Peter Gabriel Vocalist + Guitar - Adrian Belew Vocalist - Justin Hayward. Add some mellowness to it.

For me it is (only one member of bands listed):
Guitar/Lead Vocals: Dave Gilmour Guitar: Robert Fripp Keyboards: Keith Emerson Bass/ Vocals: Chris Squire Woodwinds: Chris Wood (before he died) Drums/Vocals: Robert Wyatt (before his accident)
I only listed one member per band, but if more than one were allowed it'd be: Drums: Bill Bruford & also Lyrics: Roger Waters (before he became an egomaniac)
