Topic: Modern prog without influence from the 70's Posted: January 26 2012 at 17:59 |
I don't know if this thing exists: symphonic prog (or eclectic prog, or folk prog, or even crossover, etc.) after the 70's with no influence of it.

Maybe I wouldn't. It took me time to understand Iron Maiden was influenced by prog. It shows a bit but not much.

Prog, I don't think you can find a band without a 70s influence. Progressive, yes there are quite a few.

Find me some jazz or classical that wasn't influenced by what came before? Can it really be prog without being influenced in the first place. And if you can't answer your own question it is just a waste of time. Cheers!!!

Yeah, what if this new band who's gonna release an album in 2014, has never heard any 70s prog, but they have heard plenty of Porcupine Tree and Opeth.
They're not directly influenced by the 70s. They're prog. They're awesome progressive metal.

Basically. I tend to think of "prog" as 70's influenced by definition, but there are hundreds of progressive bands that have little in common with the 70's.

They actually do have a ton of influences from bands of the 1970's, it is just that they aren't as obvious as the retro bands are.

To me, The Mars Volta sounds as 70's as you could possibly do in 2000's

Ever heard of... eh... what's the name... Ahh, now I got it: Radiohead. Very progressive but couldn't care less of the 70's prog.

I agree. I've always regarded them as one of the most unique and innovative bands of the last couple decades. The only one I can think of right now, at least within the sub genres listed by the OP.

A lot of post rock(which I consider prog for the most part)doesn't have any 70's influence(or very little if any at all). Lot's of prog metal(many of those bands seem to have a lot of 80's influences in their sound though). There's probably more than you think but as far as traditional symph prog goes it's pretty unlikely because at the very least 70's prog serves as the template for most epic or symphonic prog.
