I don't spend any time on either--but Chicago has some good jazzy pop---I hate American cheesy "Prog" of the 70's and 80's---does nothing for me.

My vote isn't a secret. I would love to see a reunion II album. Walsh and Livgren are at their peak in terms of "solo" material. Perhaps Steinhardt and Ragsdale could play. Dual guitar, dual keyboard, dual violin, triple vocals (Greer/Steinhardt/Walsh)...yum.

Shame to see Kansas labeled as cheesy prog. I never became a full fledged fan but Chicago put out some decent stuff.

They both have a weak era and an era of mastery.

Easy for me - love Chicago, can't stand Kansas.
edit: whoops, forgot to read the question,
who's the most innovative, progressive, etc etc? Don't know enough about Kansas to say fairly. But I loves Chi-cago.

Agi, or anyone else.
Recommend me albums tby Chicago that are dominated by songs posted above. Not overly pop and sappy, but still have accessibility, with fusion overtones.

Chicago III is my personal favorite. I think it fits the bill.

First three chicago albums are better than any kansas album imo. Chicago had that extra edge of being able to write melodies that anyone can sing a long to without compromising their showmanship. But after terry kath died it got pretty awful, but chicago 2 and 3 are especially great.

Chicago's first three albums all have lots of good material, before they succumbed to cheezy commercialism. Kansas got caught up in some cheese as well, but most of their material is not. They have produced some mighty fine prog. I voted Kansas.

i think Chicaco V is a bit overlooked it is better then the roumer sais it to be, but i think the tightness of it is really good, and all the tricks that chicaco pulled in a double album is filled in a normal album length which gives each song a rich variaty of instrumantation more urgently to flex muscles more
it is abit similar to And Then There Were Three by Genesis

Kansas, no doubt. Chicago is a jazz-pop fusion that fits best in Prog Related (imho).

Good call on Chicago V, Aginor. In fact, I can find something to like in every Chicago album up to XI, which is the last one before Terry Kath (guitarist, singer) died. General rule of thumb is - after the first three, he higher the number, the more commercial it is. The big exception is VII (yet another double album), on which sides one and two are mostly instrumental and jazzy, while VI was a lot more pop-song oriented. "Devil's Sweet", in fact, could possibly pass for an early Magma track in a blind test (really!).

My joke name for them is Chicano. Yeah it makes no sense from a musical standpoint but what the hell. I don't have a good one for Kansas though. Anybody?
