I'm going to make a point to listen to some Kansas this week - it's about time I gave them another chance.

Chicago, in their early days, were certainly an innovative band. Unfortunately, they're probably best remembered for their string of cheesey hits after the death of Terry Kath.
Leftovertures is simply a great album. Too bad Kansas recorded nothing even remotely close to that afterwards.
I voted for both. Neither was a groundsbreaking band, but they both had moments of greatness.

Chicago by a mile. Not only were there first 7 or so mostly excellent, a good portion were double albums. Kansas never really did it for me

How about Kansaw? Fetch me an ark. If you want to know what is fundamentally wrong with the United States it is the fact thaw we don't pronounce Arkansas and Kansas the same way.

I made up a song once called "Arkansas" and throughout I pronounced it your way. It was a huge hit. It's not your Kansas It's not my Kansas It's Ar-Kaaaaaaansas

I did cross over the Mrhippie river to visit Arkansaw on the interstate a few years ago so I could say I had been there. Even longer ago I went to the state of Misery. Went up in that arch thingy...

Leftoverture is all kansas did that was good to me, and all of those songs were the same. Chicago could write much more variety. Chicago was more innovative and much better writers as far as melody is concerned. Chicago had an emotional edge that kansas did not have, too much technical show off and not enough material. And I agree about chicago7 having some great jazzy acoustic stuff on it.

Love Kansas, but the Terry Kath era Chicago records are fantastic...they even managed a few nice songs after his untimely passing

My vote isn't a secret. I would love to see a reunion II album. Walsh and Livgren are at their peak in terms of "solo" material. Perhaps Steinhardt and Ragsdale could play. Dual guitar, dual keyboard, dual violin, triple vocals (Greer/Steinhardt/Walsh)...yum.

Im just saying leftoverture is the only kansas album I can listen to from start to finish and stay interested. Chicago 1-4 manages to change from heavy rock to jazz fusion to even latin sometimes so it always stays fresh for me.

These days I don't listen to Kansas anymore, although I used to be wild about them. I do listen to Chicago's early music. I think both are even in terms of musical innovation, but Kansas also has the great lyrics of Kerry Livgren. I choose Kansas, but they are close and it is an objective vote over all of my life, since these days I listen to Chicago and not to Kansas.

I'm bringing the first two Kansas albums to work today to give them another listen. I haven't listened to them much. I also have Leftoverture on vinyl - that one I actually like pretty well. I only bought it for "Carry on my Wayward Son", which , overplayed or not, is one heck of a classic rock song.
