I thought I suggested Jean-Philippe Goude to ZART back in 2007 (maybe in correlation with Patrick Gauthier particularly,), but no topic/ thread has ever been made about him that I can see, despite being mentioned in the fora various times by myself and others over the years.  I have searched and seen that he has been mentioned a few times, and avant prog have rejected him according to ProgFreak.  I also noticed that he's on the JRF list, though I wouldn't have thought him best for that category though electronics is combined with jazz a fair amount.  I also noticed from 2007 that he's on the List of Rejected Artists for PA, which surprises me because since I discovered his music in 2006, I always thought that Goude would be a no-brainer for PA (I thought he might be accepted as a Zeuhl one years ago).

This thread is partially an excuse to share a much beloved by me album that he was involved with that I have uploaded to youtube for evaluation purposes from a vinyl rip -- that is Jean-Phillipe Goude and Oliver Cole's Jeunes Annes which I say with absolute surety deserves to be in PA.   I have been listening to this album for six years quite regularly and just love it (become a comfort food album).  I have really wanted to suggest this album for a long time, but figured Goude would eventually get in and it would be listed under him.

And here's but on track I uploaded sometime ago from it for those who don't want to listen to the whole album:

I thinkJeunes Annes would be fine for Eclectic Prog, or alternately Avant Prog.

As for Goude aside from the collaboration with Cole, he was in Weidorge, played in Paga, was on Patrick Gauthier's excellent Bebe Godzilla and plays on Richard Pinhas Iceland.  In his Drones album,  Pinhas, Gauthier and Paganotti play on it.

Here's some music off Drones -- great album:

Since Goude has been rejected by ZART, I want to suggest Eclectic.

Different again is this 1981 album of Goude's:

Later music of his is very academic music/ chamber music oriented, and just fantastic (love, love, love this, but then this kind of music is my first love, but I don't offer these tracks as part of the evaluation process, but for insight and pleasure):

He has quite a few albums.  Between Jeunes Annes and Drones, I really think he deserves a place in PA.

However, if Goude is rejected due to discography concerns, I would at least like to add Jeunes Annes as a listing under Jean-Phillipe Goude & Olivier Cole, but Drones too really should, yes I said should, be in the archives.

Well if he's under evaluation by JRF, we'll just have to wait and see, won't we? Tongue

Unless things have changed, multi-team evaluations are allowed.  I can think of various topics in Suggest New Bands where team members were posting and it was accepted by both teams at about the same time (such evaluations were often very fast, and the suggester might choose the winner).  Sure I could wait, might be a very, very long time, but I had another idea....

Goude is is on the JRF chart with one no vote (move would be a much more positive sign) and one yes vote, the last vote being from November and it was suggested to that team by Windhawk in July for Drones which is the most relevant album for PA by him as a "solo" in name album.

Part of what  I was thinking is that Jeunes Annees could be treated as a separate project if  Goude goes nowhere. as it is a Goude AND Cole project; not just Goude. Bear in mind that Goude (for his solo works) was not just given a move vote by ZART, it was rejected (so they did not suggest to another category)  and is listed under an Old rejected prog Bands thread, so controversial?

In rateyourmusic under Goude, it doesn't even mention this Goude/Cole collaboration under his discography. http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/jean_philippe_goude

And at progreak it doesn't mention it.

http://progfreak.com/Jean-Philippe-Goude-93021.html?path=discography

Nor is tthe Goude and Cole project's sole album, Jeunes Annes at Goude's website: http://jphgoude.free.fr/discographie.html

At discogs, Jeunes Annes is listed under both Goude and Cole's entries.

I realize that collaborative albums are often included under an artist's name,  for instance, the excellent John Cale and Terry Riley album, Church of Anthrax, possibly the proggiest thing both did, is listed under John Cale in Prog Related.  Different since the band names are different, but Massiera has done a bunch of Prog projects under different names, or with the Naked City albums, but I thought that perhaps there could be a separate listings for Jean-Phillipe Goude's albums, if he ever is accepted, and the Jean-Philippe Goude and Olivier Cole project, which is why I titled the thread under that project name rather than just Goude.

If you think this was stupid or very misguided of me, I can move to General music Discussions and turn this into an appreciation thread and defer to your wisdom.  I really care more about exposing people to music I love than the additions themselves, and I love to discuss suggestions with people (I was once very active in going over suggestions by people myself albeit in an informal role).

I don't know that his Goude/ Cole collaboration has been suggested in the past, but I think Jeunes Annees worthy of consideration in it's own right (so I provide the album for evaluation to any interested parties), and it could be evaluated as a separate project.

Hopefully someone will at least like the music.  That is the album and project that has not been evaluated, that I know of, that led me to upload the music and prepare this topic, and I do believe Jeunes Annees could pass muster on its own; however, I'll wait a while and see what happens with Goude since I think it an omission and have for quite a few years that Drones and, Jeunes Annees especially are not in the database -- two of the earliest albums I got to know when I was getting into Zeuhl and other stuff.

Perhaps the JRF team who haven't voted yet, or another team, will find this Jeunes Annees topic helpful if they are not familiar with the Goude and Cole album/project.  More likely this will be just another useless topic, and waste of writing, from me when I should instead be planning my trip.

But anyway, yeah, sure we can wait to see if Goude is accepted or rejected down the road, and then if he is rejected, perhaps then I could have the Goude and Cole project, Jeunes Annees, evaluated and add it if accepted.  Hope a decision either way is forthcoming ere too long....

Glad you like it!  It really has been one of the most special albums to me (become comfort food for me).  I haven't heard of a CD re-issue, but here's hoping.  I have had my eyes out for one.  Too much great music is not released on CD.  Be neat to hear it without the snap, crackles, and pops (mostly crackles and a bit of hiss).

And The Princess Bride for the win!  Watched it on TV recently; hadn't seen it in many years.

EDIT: Damn I just played back the Jeunees Annees video, and something went wrong when I was using Windows Live Movie Maker, and it did not record some of the music (silence for minutes) or something, I knew something looked wrong.   The computer seized after it had been saving for an hour -- took many hours to save -- next time I'll use less image rendering (don't really like to up full albums,  but this is one that I should be listened to altogether for better evaluation).

I will try again at some time to do a  better job with it.

By the way, I'll mention the Goude/Cole album to JRF if they don't know it as that might help help them with the Goude evaluation, and if not then the project might be considered separately.  I should have done that before and made this an appreciation thread.  Sorry, and thanks for taking the time to respond.

I brought the Goude Cole collaboration to the JRF team's attention. If they reject (rather than vote move to another category for evalaution) Goude, which would be the second Goude rejection from a team then I might suggest that Eclectic considers the Goude/ Cole collaboration as the "Jean-Philippe Goude and Olivier Cole" artist entry.  I'd be  disappointed not to see Drones be accepted with eager arms into the fold of this archive, but sill more-so if Jeunes Annees cannot or does not find a place here ere long or ever.  With two outright rejections, if that happens, I think that might make Goude "solo" (i.e albums just released under his own name), not the Goude/Cole work, fall firmly under controversial artists, and so perhaps despite my own feelings towards Goud's significant worthiness outside of the collaboration, including only the collaborative project might make matters much easier.  Goude is obviously Prog related too from his involvement with Weidorje, Paga, Pinhas.... So I'd expect that eventually he could find a place.

^ Definitely, I reckon it's ace. A wonderful release - and I'll check the others too, in fact, I might see if JMA will bite on that one.

Yes! One of my all-time favourite films - classic. And now for that line everyone quotes, from another great character:  'My name is Inigo Montoya...'

I see that Goude has been rejected by JRF with one no vote and one yes vote now.  Zeuhl rejected Goude with one yes vote and several other no votes, and in neither case do I see a move vote.  So does that make Goude now a controversial artist?  I would like to take it to Eclectic.  I don't think Jeunes Annees has been considered.  Also, as said, the Goude Cole collaboration could be considered as a separate project.

Somehow, despite having responded to an older topic, i missed these in a search:

Topic: Jean Philippe Goude
Forum: Suggest New Bands and Artists

Or maybe because I had wanted to focus on the collaboration this time I had searched for Goude with Cole.  That was remiss, anyway.  Or a search bug or whatever. i I could have unlocked and bumped an old thread or just done this one the collaborative project.

Here's another Goude Topic:

Topic: Jean-Philippe GOUDE "Rock de Chambre"
Forum: Prog Music Lounge

This is one that really surprise me as I would have thought Goude a no-brainer for PA, et he is on the old rejected artist list and has been seperately rejected by two teams now (not even a  case of teams ping ponging a suggestion between them)

If Goude is rejected for Eclectic, then I might make a case for Prog Related (but am planning to go away for at least the summer and probably won't have internet, and might not be back after that, so I don't know).

What do the monitors and others think?  Worth pursuing?  Or should this be considered case closed?

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Sorry, never saw your post until now as I was checking to see if there had been any developments with this.  Goude wrote the music for Jeunees Annes other than one track he adapted, and from what I know he played all of the instruments other than percussion which was Olivier Cole.

I still think that Goude should be included in PA.  And if he can't now be accepted for a Prog category (be it Eclectic or Avant or whatever, personally I would not have suggested him to JRF) then he should be an easy fit for Prog Related.  As a non collab now, I can't suggest him to Admin myself -- which is a joy of stepping down, to be honest).

Here is an excerpt of a bio posted at  http://lightintheattic.net/releases/598-drones

Quote ... At 11 years old, Jean-Philippe Goude closed his eyes. When his eyelids finally re-opened, he could only see turquoise bubbles. The times had changed. The color was set by Sgt Peppers and the Beatles. Goude then discovered the minimalist movement through the work of Philip Glass and Terry Riley; this gave him insight into unexpected perspectives. Goude enrolled at the Pantin Academy of Music, where he studied with Irene Jarsky. Parallel to these studies, Goude worked with with percussionist Olivier Cole, assisted by electronics wizard Francois Gingle, who modified their synthesizers in order to obtain the weirdest possible sound. Goude released his first album (with Cole) in 1975, “Jeunes Annees” (Saravah). A few months later, with Bernard Paganotti’s band Weidorje, Goude initiated a rock adventure which ultimately resulted in a second album, “Drônes” (Polydor, 1979)—an album which features an impressive gathering of some of the biggest names in late 70’s underground French rock, including: Richard Pinhas (rhythmic synthesizer), François Auger (drums); Michel Ettori: (guitar), Patrick Gauthier (flute, synthesizer, piano, mini-moog), Manu Katché (drums), and Jean-Louis Rizet (mixing & special effects). Goude’s proto-electronica cosmic loops and moog melodies now find themselves coupled with tough prog drum beats and other elements of rock music; “Drônes” mixes solo keyboard pieces like ‘Coma’ and ‘Duo’ with group oriented pieces: ‘Dies Irae’ is a Zeuhl rock scorcher; ‘Machine’ uses a string quartet as the foundation for synthesizer musings by Goude and Richard Pinhas; ‘Trepidanse’ is a playful piece for dueling synthesizers. Although the Weidorje influence is evident on some numbers, Jean-Philippe Goude takes his music well beyond the Zeuhl trend. He offers a very personal approach to music, which contributed to the album’s initial success, and has ensured that its cult status has lasted until the present day....

Here is a review of Drones from the same site:

Quote Drônes” (Polydor, 1979)—an album which features an impressive gathering of some of the biggest names in late 70’s underground French rock, including: Richard Pinhas (rhythmic synthesizer), François Auger (drums); Michel Ettori: (guitar), Patrick Gauthier (flute, synthesizer, piano, mini-moog), Manu Katché (drums), and Jean-Louis Rizet (mixing & special effects).

His latest works -- released a couple of albums in 2010 are influenced by Satie and Glass.  I dodn't really care that musch if he's included or not that much anymore, but I still find it strange that he hasn't found a place in PA outside of his work with Weidorje, Paga, Richard Pinhas, and Patrick Gauthier.

For what nothing it's worth, in Sean Trane's review for the RIO/Avant categorised artist Francoise Breant's album Sons Optiques, he wrote that "Bréant's albums might also be reminiscent of JP Goude's or Wideman's records".  Not that that means anything ssince tangerine Dream can be reminiscent of Sotockhausen and Ligeti, but we're not calling for their inclusion.  And can say such things about many, plus there's Goude's work in recongnised Prog groups to consider.  Benoit Wideman is included in PA, by the way.

Anyway, sorry, I made a promise to myself that I would drop this suggestion before, but looked up the topic out of curiosity and saw your comment.

Goude was rejected by the JR/F team some time ago.  There seems to be little use of the "move" option by us there.  If another team wants to consider him, I have no problem with ithat.
Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

Thanks, I knew your team had rejected it, and I know that you've done stellar work with your team.

I think I might have suggested to your team that perhaps you might evaluate Jeunes Anees separately as a Goude/ Cole project even if Goude himself is rejected.  Though I would rather not have that now for reasons I think I've already illustrated in my ramblings in this thread.

Unfortunately, I can't check the thread any more to see how discussion about the proposal developed there (and my memory is not quite what it once was, which I've been saying for 10 years).

Having been on the Eclectic team, we used the move vote  a lot (not surprising considering the nature of the category).  I would think that a  team would suggest to another team if they thought it had PA merits, but is not right for that category, but each team works differently.  I guess I can understand that JRF wouldn't as regularly get cases that would be suitable for other categories so haven't required the move vote as much as other teams would.  I always thought as a team member is it right for PA first, and secondly where (be it any Prog or Prog Related category).

I don't expect any other team to express any interest, especially since two teams have rejected Goude (and neither team has I believe brought it to another team thinking he SHOULD be in PA, but just isn't right for our category).  That said, perhaps that became a less common process after The New Suggestions team were on top of tracking suggestions to try to ensure that none fall through the cracks.

If a New Suggestions Team member thinks it worthy of addition, then I expect that they will follow-up with the process.

I have his Drones album which is like a sister album to the Weidorje and Bebe Godzilla recordings. Goud is listed under Zeuhl on RYM but there is a Jazz vibe for sure.  Maybe Eclectic is the way to go if he's been rejected by ZART and JazzRock Fusion.

@Logan, as you say in your post dated 7th April, 2012 there are several minutes of silence on that video in the OP. Silence from 8-12 mins, then more silence from 15-23 mins. Just to make anyone else who might listen aware. I checked YouTube for other samples but your's are the only vids there.

I'm a wee bit confused by your most recent post. Do you still want the Goude/Cole collaboration treated as a separate entity, or do you want another team to eval Goude and to include 'Jeunes...' in that eval and to add it to his discography if cleared? My initial impression, from what I am able to listen to of the album, is that I don't see it in Eclectic. I know he was rejected by JR/F but did they hear this album? I'm gonna check out the other videos later...

I've deleted the old video and uploaded Jeunes Annees in two parts -- meant to do that before.

I mentioned Jeunes Annees to JRF as I recall, and provided listening material, but I don't know if they considered it.

Although I would rather Goude be in PA, and the Goude/COle album be included under his discography, I offered the idea of evaluating it as a seperate project if Goude'by himself could not easily find a place (and I worried about him now being considered controversial due to rejections).  Reallly Jeunes Annees is a Goude album as he composed it (and adapted one other track) even if it doesn't always appear under his discography as a "solo" artist.  I would have thought Avant Prog first for Goude (though often listed as Zeuhl for Drones), but would have voted yes for him in Eclectic while on the team as I feel his work touches on sufficient Prog category styles (electronic, JRF, Zeuhl...).

I discovered his albums many years ago now by searching for Zeuhl albums.

I always thought Goude was already in the archives but never checked Confused. I definitely agree he should be here somewhere between Zehul and JRF, and if not we should create a sub genre only for him LOL.

Drones was always kind of a special album to me, but I never heard the Jeunes Annees album before, thanks for that!

Thanks for the recommendation Ashley, we added Goude to the jazz site.

This artist got approved by the Eclectic team some time ago.  If anyone is more knowledgeable about him and is able to submit a biography / add albums, that would be a big help.

This is good news Rob. I'd do it but I dont think I have the authority to do so, so hopefully someone jumps in here.
