The first Mahavishnu Orchestra album I listened to was Inner Worlds. Needless to say I was put off from trying their other stuff. I still haven't listened to Bird's of Fire.

It's not a rule but it happened to me quite a lot. Examples: Beardfish - sleeping in traffic 2, Camel - Mirage, Caravan - If i could..., Deep Purple - Deep Purple, Genesis - Selling England..Jethro Tull - Aqualung, and a million more..
So what do you think?

Not in my case:

  1. I listened A Trick of the Tail before any Gabriel era album, now ATOTT is my least favorite Genesis Prog album, even behind W&W
  2. The first Tull album I heard was Benefit, still I love it, but I stay with TaaB by far
  3. The first Kansas album I heard was Point of Know Return, i consider Leftoverture far superior.
  4. I heard The Yes Album before CttE and Relayer, both immense compared with my first experience.
But it also happens
  1. The first Triumvirat album I heard was Illusions on a Double Dimple, IMO the best
  2. The first ELP album I heard was Trilogy, still my favorite
  3. I started my Wakeman collection with Six Wives, not my favorite but recognize it's quality as the best
  4. I was introduced to MAGMA by K.A. - My favorite Magma album by miles.
I know a lot of Progheads who had their Genesis debut with Invisible Touch or We Can't Dance LOL

Now three observations
  1. There's always a special place for the first album I heard of any band.
  2. When I was a kid, there was no Internet (neither Prog magazines in my country), so it was always a random selection sometimes I got the best, others the worst.
  3. Since I joined PA, I listen the album with higher ratings by reviewers with similar taste to mine before any other, so normally I start with the best,
Iván

Birds Of Fire is amazing! Anything by the first quintet is superb.

I think most listeners probably identify with the particular era of a band when they discover them, even if not to one particular album.  For instance, people who discovered Gabreil-era Genesis first usually don't like the Phil-era releases, while those who discovered Genesis much later, don't usually care for the Gabriel stuff.  It's not a hard and fast rule, but it's been my observation in general.

I think that not always the first albums are the best ones, for example:

Rush with their Rush album
Dream Theater with When a Dream and a Day Unite
Nightwish with Angels Fall First
Porcupine Tree with On the Sunday of Life...
And a lot more

I was fortunate to be of the age to be able buy albums as they came out, right from the very start of prog rock and in the main and for the same reasons as others on here for some of the groups the first album they made was the best and in a lot of cases it happened to be the only one they made at that time.
there are a number of reasons for that, poor airplay and advertising being a big factor, the albums did not sell they dis- banded or group members became disilusioned and the band breaks, up or key members leave and their next album suffers.sometimes they throw everything into the first album and run out of ideas.
ive just bought the new Galahad album and am very disapointed with it,its took yonks to make yet  parts of the lyrics are very repetitive on two songs and one of the songs is almost identical to one on their previous album and no noteworthy guitar solos.bah!!! however in Galahads case their first album was deffo the best and the re-master just conferms it even more for me.LOL

At times the first album I heard is the best for example VDGG's Pawn Hearts, and  King Crimson's In the Court - but on many occasions its not the case.

The first King Crimson album was good, but I feel the 1972 - 1974 and 1981 - 1984 material accomplished just as much, if not more.

This is both in terms of "First prog album a band released" and "First album I heard from this group".

The first one often gets the inside track as favorite, but it's often surpassed.  That's especially true when digging into a back catalog.  The Internet makes music discovery so easy now... almost too easy.  I still remember the excitement of buying Selling England by the Pound on a whim because I liked the Collins era stuff.  I was just starting to get into prog bands like ELP, Kansas, and Yes, but never know of that side of Genesis.  I was a poor high school student in the 1980s then, so I had to wait weeks or even months before buying another... but I'd go into the store and just stare at these other old Genesis albums from the same era...wondering what was there.

Other bands got much better for me after my first exposure.  An example is Porcupine Tree.  I first heard Signify in the late 90s and liked it... then I bought some of the earlier ones and was kind of meh...  But Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, and In Absentia made them a favorite in the early 2000s.
