Usually prog fans aren't very good with love songs. Popular love songs try to depict the most personal and specific feelings in broad, mass-produced strokes. Also, a lot of the time the artist is not feeling the emotion or idea they're expressing at all, but just singing about love because they think the market will like it. Most people don't think about it too much but progheads are nothing if not intellectual about music so we notice this and thus most pop love songs ring false. (Of course there are popular acts that have produced love songs with some real feeling in them- Chicago are a very good example of this, with cuts like I Remember The Feeling and Hard Habit To Break having genuine emotion in them.) However, love songs that really do get you in the heart certainly do exist, songs where the artist is successfully expressing something they feel. Here are two favourites of mine. (Somebody is the song I dedicate to my wife.) Perhaps some more later, but I'd like to see your choices too. Edited by Textbook - April 27 2012 at 05:22 |

I like Hard Habit to Brake, (i though when my english was porer that he sang "a hard Hobbit to beake" it ringed well with my Tolkien fanboyisme
few can sing a love ballad as good as Steve Lukather though, his good voice and with the music backing him by Toto is powerfull and touching this is my particular favourite |

^ Yeah man, their best 80's album post Signals! I really love this song so much. It resonates with me now and it will even more when I become older. The song also features some of Alex's best work (imo) in terms of chord choices and harmonic structure. Ged's voice is prime on this cut as well.

Yes to the above songs. The Beatles had written a s%&tload of great love songs. 'Michelle', 'Girl', 'In My Life', ... it's like "You name it". ELO - Telephone Line, Shangri-La, Livin' Thing.

Mark Free, now Marcie Free. He owes a lot to Robin Randall (lyrics, synths) and Dianna DeWitt (backing vocals) in his solo stuff.

My favorite love songs were all written by Leonard Cohen anyway.
