Pan - eclectic prog in the Traffic way.

One studio album from 1970.
One live album, 1970.

http://www.reocities.com/rainforest/7852/Tarkus/Denmark/denmark2.htm : Pan was founded by Frenchmen Robert Lelievre who was travelling around Europe to escape from military service and settled down in Denmark. Pan recorded only one but very good record. It contains 9 original, refined songs showing outstanding Robert’s talent. The album became soon a cult-record but unfortunately the group split - Robert struggling with inner demons made it difficult to cooperate with other members. He committed suicide in 1973.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Snzde0vf5ls Pan was a Danish rock group (1969-1970) founded by the late Robert Lelievre and Arne Würgler. They were featured several times in the Swedish movie "Deadline", including here while rehearsing an alternative version of "We must do something before the end of the day". From left to right: Robert, Thomas Puggaard-Müller, unknown, Michael Puggaard-Müller, Arne, & Henning Verner. For more information on Pan, check the website http://www.panrobertlelievre.com.

In Dag Erik Asbjørnsen's book he wrote of the group: "Their collective past gave no indication of the sophisticated sound of Pan. The band's eponymous album is one of those tightly arranged and strictly produced efforts, polished to make Lelievre's songs shine. Most of the tracks blend various styles of rock, folk, jazz and small drops of classical and gospel into a strong and potent brew - it strikes me each time I hear it just how homogeneous and forceful it is". Yeah, this is good stuff! Thumbs Up
Eclectic (or possibly Psyche?) seems about right for them. The band were added to progfreak about 5 years ago before genre chart activities logging was introduced in the fall of 2007, but it appears that both Heavy Prog and the old Art Rock sub teams had a brief look at them back then: http://progfreak.com/Pan-98582.html?path=pa/heavy_prog, and http://progfreak.com/Pan-98582.html?path=pa/ar, but no voting is recorded in the 'recent changes' chart: http://progfreak.com/Pan-98582.html?path=pa/recent. Art Rock no longer exists as a sub on here, so we have to concentrate on what is showing under Heavy: ie. one vote for 'unsure', one for 'abstain', and a summary tag of 'Discuss (some votes were cast, no decision reached yet)'...!! Shocked

They belong on here for sure, so since Andy is one of the main players in the current Heavy Prog team, and also the monitoring and pre-eval guy for this forum, let's see what he makes of it all in a short while... Smile

Yikes, this suggestion is old as dirt. They've been sitting on the Heavy chart for years before I even joined the site. At some point we'll probably have another look at them, but just from listening to the samples, I have a feeling the opinion would be a resounding no or a move.

I'm no longer surprised to find yet another suggestion that got lost (BTW I didn't find the Pan suggested before when I did a search.)

Anyway, of course it would be a no for heavy prog, it should never have gotten there in the first place. With the knowledge accumulated by PA over the years since they were first (?) suggested we now know they belong under eclectic.

If there is any consistency in the evaluation of bands similar to Traffic, then Pan would be under eclectic.

A comparison with Traffic is a bit one-sided (while I can see the connection)  - Traffic is a band with a span of 40 years and dozen of releases, pushing boundaries at very early stages of progressive rock.  This one is one-album-only  and less elaborated - however I do hear prog textures and think it deserves inclusion somewhere.

There is not much consistency in evaluating bands, but I'll ask my teammates what do they think.

Thumbs Up

Much appreciated clarke2001.

For clarity, Pan are worth three albums of different material from '69-'70: two studio albums - one of which is not yet (but hopefully will be) released - and one live album. If needed, I can assist with more material than the tube samples presented above.
