I suppose this question could be separated into two(or even three) separate categories.

A. Does the average person know what prog is?

B. Does the average music fan(not average prog fan-duh)know what prog is?

C. Actually a third one can be added. Does the average classic rock fan know what prog is?

Also, does the average music store worker know what prog is. I say most do.

How much is age a factor? How about where they live, ethnicity, gender etc. I guess it's the sociologist in me(I have a BA in sociology)that is curious about these things. :)

If there are any other similar threads to this one please point them in my direction.

Same rules apply as to pornography...
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

No, at least in my experience.  Even prog fans sometimes don't know what prog is; they like the music but don't classify it as "prog;" it's just the stuff they listened to in high school or college.

When I talk about prog, I sometimes get reactions like, "What does the Italian city (Prague) have to do with this music?" or something like that.  Actually, it helps if you use the phrase "progressive rock" instead.  People still might not know what it is, but they'll still recognize it as a music style.

C. Rather yes (as I've been a classic rock fan for some time before prog blew my mind away and then inhabited in my head instead of blown away mind).

Can't comment on the first two. But I guess, the answer for A is definitely no.

I usually get blank looks when I respond to "what sort of music do you like?" and answer "progressive rock". Just last week I surprisingly got into a detailed discussion on the various merits of King Crimson and Genesis albums with a guy I'd just met. Bizarre but really enjoyable.

Prague is in the Czech Republic, not Italy.

^ AAAHHHHH I was going to make that my sig!!! You beat me!!!

Anyway, as far as I know, the average person DOES NOT know what prog rock is. Especially within my age group (18-26), most of them have no idea, though once in a while there will be someone who likes a band or 2 that can be considered prog, but they don't realize it.

The average music listener also DOES NOT know what prog rock is, at least from my experience.

A lot has to do with age, but this also goes along with being exposed to it. The average young adult is probably exposed to prog between the ages of 18-26 about 0.006% of that time, if they're "lucky". You have to search for it yourself if you ask me.

Short answer, no.

I either have to call it "experimental rock" or give examples of mainstream bands like Radiohead, Pink Floyd etc.

Although anyone with vague musical knowledge (most people that I talk to), will know it immediately.

I've said "progressive rock" before and have gotten answers like "oh with jazz?" or "like [insert popular pop-prog band]?".  From my experience, most people don't know exactly what "progressive rock" is, and definitely not what "prog" is, but it's kinda self-explanatory to people that are into music, even if they can't list any bands.

In Israel, in the circles of rock fans, a respectable amount at least know what prog is. Not everyone, but many.

Occasionally, I'll encounter a classic rock fan who'll be familiar with the term "prog" and associate it with bands such as Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, and other more mainstream prog bands, but that's it.  Also, in my experience, age isn't really a factor.

Not in my experience, no. I've had to explain it many times, and yes age is definitely a factor.

I've never been asked what kind of music I do like. Maybe I don't know any average persons, so I can't answer to this topic's questions.

I thought the "Italian town Prague" was a joke. I imagined any prog-fan (non-average person?) could tell you that Prague is in Czech Rep, as easily as he/she could spot major USA towns like Topeka or Toronto. Wink

Its a tricky question, but i suppose you are asking, What the "term" prog means.
If you are asking how many know what the term stands for, A.B.C. very few knows.
If you are asking if they know prog music, A. B. C. most know some bacis prog, like Rush, Floyd, Genesis ect.

But if you are actualy asking, what "prog" is, it becomes a religius question, and nobody knows. A question of belive.

Prog is whatevey you want it to be. So dont diss other peoples prog, and they wont diss yours

Almost everyone knows some prog bands (Floyd, Genesis, Rush) but they don't often know that they're prog bands. Most people like some prog; they just don't know it IS prog, yet they will frequently rubbish prog as a genre as "self indulgent" or something similar.

Occasionally you meet someone who does know what it is - I recently explained to a new acquaintance that I was a "prog rock fan - do you know what that is?" and it turned out he had almost 2000 prog albums, including some I never thought I'd see again.

In my experience with my age group (15-18), almost nobody knows prog, and even fewer enjoy it. Some classic rock listeners who I know like bands like Pink Floyd, Rush, and Styx (the first 2 of which practically got me into progressive rock), but they hardly know very common prog bands like Yes and Jethro Tull!

I'd say that the average music store owner definitely knows what prog is. Some places even have a section for it.
