Topic: Radiohead vs the Smashing Pumpkins Posted: May 18 2012 at 01:10 |
Just wanted to compare two bands who i think are somewhat similar, both were somewhat labled grunge during the grunge face but were sertenly not, both have an artistic aproach to art rock, build on Janes Addiction and Soundgardens early alternative metal sound,
also why is not the Smashing Pumpkins in prog archives while Radiohead discussion is also possible to discuss, i have no meaning about it just want to hear the good arguments, (not critisising the crossoverteams I feal Radiohead is a good addition to prog archives and deservs to be on PA, for progressing 90s alternative rock,) i think the Smashing Pumpkins should be viewed in same limelight as Radiohead in that asspect as a progressive alternative rock band,

The King of Limbs was utter sh*t, but so was Zeitgeist. Luckily, the Pumpkins' new album (out in June) will be amazing, and Radiohead continues up its own ass. The Smashing Pumpkins never really got the respect they deserved, and Radiohead got way too much of it.

I for one loved "King Of Limbs" and hated "Zeitgeist" a lot. In general though, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" is better than any Radiohead album. But Radiohead has some incredible albums.
I really don't know who to vote for.

KIng of Limbs was OK, a few gems but nothing as good as " In Rainbows" They are getting a bit too self indulgent, have to love the bass though :-)
Great to hear SP have a new album out soon

Radiohead are awesome. I liked The King of Limbs, even though I have little use for "Little by Little" and "Feral". In Rainbows remains my favorite album of theirs though.
The Smashing Pumpkins have some great songs, but I can't get myself to really appreciate a full album of theirs. Zeitgeist was awful.
Radiohead certainly are the more progressive of the two.

I'll vote Radiohead. Mostly on the strength of The Bends, Ok Computer and In Rainbows. The only SP album I listen to is Siamese Dream, but I need to find my copy of Mellon Collie... I've not listened to it for years, but can't find it anywhere in my collection. I may just bite the bullet and get another copy. I do remember liking it a lot.

I have liked very few bands from the 90s as much as Radiohead and found very few, from among more respectable names, as boring as I do Smashing Pumpkins. Easy vote.

Radiohead is on progarchives simply because of OK Computer. Smashing pumpkins are not prog to me at all. I hear no weirdness in them and they don't experiment really at all although man they used to be able to write some GOOD dang music. Mellon Collie is great.

Both of these bands seem overly pretentious to me. But I really can't choose because I'm not a huge fan of either.

I love the Mellon Collie album, but beyond that, I can take or leave both the Pumpkins and Radio Head. At least Radio Head doesn't really have any songs I dislike - whereas there are a few Pumpkin songs I can't stand. I'll abstain.

I believe Radiohead are in PA not because of OK Coputer but because of Kid A and what came after it, they showed a real diversity in sound and in writing skills. Having heard maybe 50% of their discography, none of it tops my love for SP'S Siamese Dreams or their debut Gish. As i love SP i have never cared listening to one of their albums after Machina.
About prog or not prog Radiohead have a connection to art rock but Smashing Pumpkins certainly does not deserve a place here, not even in Prog Related. Said that still my vote goes to The Smashing Pumpkins.

I'm not really one to rip on bands I don't like, but I saw the thread title and threw up a little in my mouth.

Sorry.
I actually like a couple of Radiohead songs.
But I despise The Smashing Pumpkins, mostly the vocals.

Smashing Pumpkins are far more entertaining to my ears.

There is no new Pumpkins album. There's a Billy album with the SP logo for enhanced sales. SP without James/Darcy/Chamberlin is fine if you want it, but it's like calling a Townshend album a Who album. For the true personality of the band you need more than the one guy. IMO.
In this poll, SP. Radiohead are a snooze.

The only Pumpkin I have is a track on the soundtrack album for Lost Highway. I only know them by their radio play stuff, so I went with Radiohead, so I can't speak to their worthiness for inclusion.

Can't agree more with this although I didn't believe TKoL was sh*t but Radiohead is definitely in decline. Oh yeah, Mellon Collie, Adore, Machina and Siamese Dream are all in my favorite albums of all time list. The SPs for me.

I've never heard anything about Smashing Pumpkins. I don't know what kind of music they do. I believe, if they were worth knowing, they'd be listed on PA.
Radiohead on their part are the most progressive major rock band of the 21st century. Surely, they are not prog if you with prog mean the style created by Yes, Genesis, Crimso, Gentle Giant and suchlike, but they are progressive rock.
