Baroness is pretty great. They started making kind of a "light Mastodon" sound. And they have developed into their own with their new album.

Instead of going a more metal direction, the new album is more like heavy indie rock with metal leads. Yellow and Green is shaping out to be a pretty good release. (Although I don't get the double CD thing when the whole album could have fit on 1 CD). But overall they are a great band that is good for getting people into metal because they aren't ridiculously hectic or heavy ever. They also have good harmonies and pretty catchy vocal melodies.

But, in the end, while they are a great band, they don't do anything monumental and they never give me "jaw-dropping" moments. Despite the fact that I own their first 2 albums and will own this next one, I won't be quite as impressed as I feel I WANT to be by them. It's like their music could never go beyond a 4/5 star release in a sense.

What do you guys think of this band?

ALSO... NPR is doing a free "first listen" of the new album on their site.

I like all their stuff, but First and Second are my favourites by far.

Like them lots.  Very much looking forward to Yellow & Green.

I know some will curse me, but they are not a good band at all. All their albums sound the same and even inside albums the songs do not vary much. A very uninspired and stagnant sludge band, progressive or not.

The production on Red and Blue are also dreadful.

Well yeah, that's the impression you'd get if you pirated it in 128kbps MP3

Actually Yellow and Green is much softer and more cohesive than everything they have done before.

And the production is better on those albums. Green especially ends very beautifully the last few tracks.

Dream Theater at the very least tries different stuff with every different album (latest one excepted), even though liking or disliking their music is debatable and mostly based on subjective tastes.

The same thing does not happen with said band: every album IS the same. Maybe ten years into their career they finally have the guts to try something different with this new album, let's hope for it.

Yea. Black Clouds and Silver Linings is NOT the same album as Systematic Chaos. Haha. :-D

But really the new Baroness album sounds very similar to their others but they aren't trying to be heavy anymore. It has a completely different flavor in a sense. I think they are going to make some money on this one. Both CDs have quite a bit of win. I mean, its not perfect. hell, I would probably give the album 3.5/5. Not super super amazing or anything. But this new album is the most different from what their peers are doing. It's indie-sludge.

LOL It's much better and varied/eclectic, though.

Indie-sludge? Well, that's another album I'm NOT listening in 2012. Clown

These guys are huge. They have everything: prog, ultra-catchy, a bit spacy. Absolutely dig them.

...On the subject of Baroness I think they´ve developed a lot over the years. All three studio albums have a very different sound IMO (and I have a promo with good sound of the latestBig smile). I haven´t given it enough spins to evaluate yet, but it´s something I look forward to do.
