Topic: 21st Century Albums, Round 1, Symphonic Pool 2 Posted: July 21 2012 at 00:58 |
Note that Testimony is just the first album, does not include Testimony 2.
Top 2 from each poll will go to next round.

Question Mark for me.
Lots of Morse-related stuff in the symphonic section.

Not a Neal Morse fan, so that makes it very easy to choose Echolyn!

V, but given more time I might go for Echolyn. I don't think you can judge their new album as better than V... yet.

I either dislike these or don't know them. What else is new for me and the newer Symphonic era.

Symphonic pool? Can I really swim in symphony?
Seriously: none of these albums reach the high level of classic Symphonic Prog, thus I can't vote.

I'm not a big fan, and i even know that these albums are well-known. Just because they aren't Foxtrot or whatever doesn't mean they aren't classics.

No, not necessarily Foxtrot, but classic has a few connotations. When I would speak of symphonic classics, that would mean albums of a certain period (the classic Prog era being roughly the late 60s through mid 70s). Generally classic means of well-recognised artistic excellence (first class, of outstanding value), of historical value, standing the test of time, and/ or of a certain period. One can speak of modern classics (lauded albums, but that usually implies that they are well-known as well as generally considered superb examples of their ilk).
I don't really care much for Foxtrot or Close to the Edge, but I still recognise those to be classics. I prefer 70s albums in symphonic prog such as Clearlight's and Arachnoid's, but would not put those over other more famous ones that are bigger classics in that they are both popular, considered by many to be superb, and held to be of great historic importance to Symphonic Prog.
I expect that some of these albums could be considered more modern classics of their ilk. I don't like what I know of any of these albums, but an album such as V is praised highly by sizeable segments of the Prog population.
Anyway, I can't vote on this. In terms of modern symph, I like Kotebel, Karda Estra, and Deluge Grander, but don't listen to a lot of PA symph category music from any period.

echolyn i guess, but i'm not really crazy about any of these. favourite 21st century symphonic has to be "To Shatter All Accord" by Discipline, i much prefer it to all of these.
