Topic: Is Djent dead, or was it always just silly? Posted: August 07 2012 at 15:51 |
So is djent dead to you as well?
It's a silly genre in general. To me, it is just a ripoff of Sikth. A lot of those bands CLAIM Meshggah influence and I'm sure it's there, but they don't come close to matching the polyrhythmic complexities of Meshuggah. And Sikth has more interesting guitar lines imo.
Also, after the arrival of Ever Forthright, which included a saxophone and allowed the music to spread into more gorgeous and atmospheric territory, it makes Periphery's new album sound obsolete.
I feel as though there is more that can be done with influence from the genre, but sticking within the genre itself has run it's course completely, kinda like metalcore and hardcore music.
What are your thoughts?

Once a genre or style of music is created or developed, it never really goes away. Someone will always be doing it, somewhere.

I don't like it, and I don't like bands, like Periphery, who play this. It's no more than some heavy riffs played over odd signatures with low guitar tuning. Not very progressive to my ears.

I thought it was just an onomatopoeia describing Meshuggah's particular tone.

I've been wondering this myself for the last couple of months. In order for a genre/style/movement to survive it needs a following and I get the feeling that the fan base, have instead, shrunk in numbers. Another importaintly thing is for the genre/style/movement to have a statement/point to it. I lack this in djent. Still, it's not as pointless as say... Glam Metal or, in prog terms, Regressive Prog (post '70 bands that play classic prog without anything particularly new added to the mix). These types of genres/styles/movements generally only exist in a time capsule with few new generations of fans to keep them alive. It's true that a genre / style / movement can only expand to a certain point but I still feel that djent haven't reached even close to its boundaries. Personally I feel that there has been a shift from the technical playing to the groove of doom/sludge over the last year. Take for instance bands like Mastodon, Opeth and Baroness that have all shifted gears on their latest albums towards a more organic approach to music making. Maybe there is a connection there?

Many people classify Animals as Leaders as Djent (along with Progressive Metal usually) and I don't find them silly at all...nor dead - they seem very much alive to me.

Didn't Meshuggah just put out a new album?

Colin beat me to it.
Also, the djent scene is deader than disco. And if I were to have my way, about as dead as the next person to make a thread about it as well.
I'm tired of answering this. Djent is a guitar timbre. People think it's a genre because hundreds of cookie-cutter bands showed up at the same time and copied each other on a niche style, all while failing to add any sort of innovation whatsoever. This is a surefire recipe for killing anything, period. Bands like Animals as Leaders, Ever Forthright, Cloudkicker, and Periphery that have survived this fallout did so because they were more than just hardcore kiddies buying their first 8-string, and because they have since transgressed into something very stylistically unique and musically brilliant.
Meshuggah are the undisputed kings of everything they do, and that will never change.

You're right in what you're saying.
Except for that. Sorry I pissed you off, but I was listening to some new band that described themselves as "djent" and it sounded like the most boring samey shizz. It's making all this new prog metal sound even better to me, as Haken and their brethren are at least using more than 4 chords.
I wanted to hear people's opinion's on the subject. So again, sorry. Ha

It's not your fault Smurphy, I at least thank you for trying to provoke some discussion.
You just wouldn't believe how many "omg is djent a djenre???" threads popped up over the last two years. That, and it's been the bane of the underground metal community for some time now. The whole thing is just tiresome.

I coughed and sneezed at the same time onto a microscope slide and checked into it.
Definitely alive.
