The Nice were the first real prog band.  Not the Beatles.

I liked the answers Jesus, and mussorgsky, and I gotta commend valarius, hell of a fan!

As for my opinion, even though The Beatles were definitely not prog, I'd say they played a strong part in it's creation. Sgt. Pepper's was a big influence on Days of Future Past, and Robert Fripp has mentioned how it's closing epic, A Day In the Life, was a huge influence on what he wanted to do with music. So I'm inclined to believe that if it wasn't for The Fab Four, other bands wouldn't have been as ambitious or experimented with cultural sounds and instruments or the use of symphonic elements.

beatles was not a prog so they could not start it. influence can not be considered as starting doing it.

As many, including this site agree, first real prog album was In the Court of the Crimson King, by KC and so logicaly they started it.
