Topic: Musicians Fight: Andrew Latimer or David Gilmour Posted: August 31 2012 at 13:44 |
Both of these guitarists are recognized as very emotional players, but who appeals to you the most?
My humble vote goes to Mr Latimer. I find him to be better technically and yet still to have emotional playing. I watched live version of Lady Fantasy where Andrew cried like a baby while soloing/playing like a boss. That's what emotional playing means!

My 2 favorite prog guitarists. I might give the slight edge to Latimer for making me cry slightly more often.
Yeah, Latimer it is.

Latimer is technically a bit better and has even more emotion than Gilmour, so he gets my vote.
But add Hackett and Rothery and you have my 4 favourite guitarists of all time; they're all brilliant.

Latimer is more technically more interesting. Though the solo in Echoes is awesome.

Only on a site like this would someone so well known as David Gilmour trail a lesser known guitarist. But then we are aficionados on the subject are we not? I voted for Latimer myself - he has greater flexibility and can carry the listener farther and longer with just his guitar than Gilmour can. Not that Gilmour is second-rate of course.

If you ask 100 people (in general) who is better? The guitarist of Pink Floyd or the one from Camel, the answers will be: 1. Camel? hehe you made a mistake pal, these are cigarettes. (30 people), 2. I have no idea who are these bands (10 people). 3. The one of Pink Floyd of course! (55 people) 4. Andrew Latimer, because blah blah blah.... (5 people). I'm pretty sure that these 5 people will be hanging around in this site... Andrew Latimer for me as well... (Not that Gilmour is a second class guitarist of course!)

Throughout Mirage there's truly great and memorable playing, The Snow
Goose has moody and emotional playing (BRILLIANT!), and Moonmadness has a
guitar sound unlike any other.
GO ANDY!!
Now, Fripp vs. Latimer

David for his knack of providing really big atmosphere to the given tune and his unique approach to playing pentatonic/blues licks, that I really respect. Latimer's all right. The Snow Goose, title track, is probably my favourite playing from him - serene.

Gilmour for me. I have been getting into Camel, and there's something really special and nostalgic about them that I have been loving. But just every song Gilmour touches with his guitar gains something I love.

Since you asked who appeals more, Gilmour. Latimer is the more accomplished guitarist, I think, but I love Gilmour's solos more.
