Hey guys,
I know a lot have been said about "Islands" song by KC in this forum. A lot of people find it boring, and other recognize it as I do, the great subtleness, the mood, the brilliant style of this song by King Crimson. I enjoy those parts with solos by oboe and trumpet which really take me off the ground. I would appreciate if you indicate other songs which have this same style from other artists. I know this is an unusual song by KC, and I dont know much bands or groups which produce this type of songs. It souns like a chamber orchestra piece with lyrics. Very rare and impressive. Thanks a lot Afonso

If you look after music like "Islands", I don't think you will find it. It's a unique piece.
If you look for a chamber prog music piece, try this RPI album : IL PAESE DEI BALOCCHI : st |

I find other avant/post rock/chamber rock bands similar. Moments in Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden, Maudlin of the Well's Bath, Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye, some songs from Jaga Jazzist and Aranis and The Enid's In the Region of the Summer Stars (probably the most similar to Islands).

Maybe try Janus' Gravedigger. The title track lasting some 20 minutes shares some of the same gentle and oceanic character in the mellotron.

For some reason Jade Warrior's early stuff comes to mind - "Jade Warrior", "Released", and "Last Autumn's Dream" each juxtapose quiet pastoral stuff with jarring distortion, which is a big part of Islands' appeal. I say "for some reason" because I never really thought of JW and Crimso as really being that alike before.

Talk Talk is a great suggestion; maybe a little more out-there than "Islands" but pretty similar in feel.

OK Guys.
Thanks for the incredible suggestions. Im listening to some of them right now. I guess what really impress me in the "islands" song is that amazing trumpet solo. Please consider that in your suggestions. Thank you. |

thank you hellogoodbye for the interesting indication.
I know pretty little from italian prog. When music is indicated by friends it is so much easier to try!

Hey Pianoman!
Talk talk sounds to me too much polite. The producers in the eighties were very worried with the cleanliness of the records. even distortion is controlled I guess thats why I prefer the 70's. But undoubtly "Eden" got something! |

RPI is so rich and varied. It takes years to explore it. Here is another italian wonder from 1975 with classical and jazz influences.

The instrument on "Islands" is, I believe, a cornet. On "Wheel" it is cornet and/or flugelhorn. In any case: wonderful! Starts at 3:14, but listen to the whole song. Much of the song is not mellow as "Islands" is, but wonderful nonetheless.
