I don't hate it, well I don't like the first part at all. But overall I think it's nothing special and just average.

It was the epitome of the movement of music at the time. It is historically supremely important.

It is also extremely good.

I once thought it very good even though I never fully liked it.  I haven't had the urge to listen to it for at least six or seven years methinks (and then I'd only known it for a year or two).  I don't have the album any longer (moved on from Genesis though I still like The Lamb), but checked it out on youtube and got bored. If you compare it to other epics by big Prog names such as Van der Graaf Generator's "Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" and Magma's "Theusz Hamtaahk", those just slay it for me.

Mostly bored.  No real desire to ever fire it up.

It frightens me a bit that people are bored by it and only consider it 'average' Apocalypse in 9/8 is not exactly something anyone can just chuck out

I find it an excellent song, among my favourites. Though it did take a bit of time to reach that status, at first I found it rather dull and didn't understand all the fuss about it. I do sort of like the studio version better, though both live versions I know have parts I like more than on the studio one; specially the second half, which is much more powerful, and I like Phil's singing it better on Seconds Out. However, both live versions butcher the "comic" part in the middle, while on the studio version I actually like it pretty much, and I find the song to be perfect from beginning to end, one fabulous musical passage after another. Also, I do understand people might see it as separate pieces of music patched together, but for me they just flow perfectly and wouldn't think about listening to any of them on its own, I must listen to the whole piece.

When I first heard it about Christmas 1972 it went straight to the top of my "best song ever" list and stayed there until 1986. About 5 years ago it got back into top spot (from Refugees) and is still there.

The word "super" seems inadequate for how good this song is (and not a very good pun either).

Anyway, I love Supper's Ready, it has climbed very high on my favorite songs of all time list since I first heard it some months ago, same goes for Foxtrot on my album list (though the ultimate Genesis album will always be The Lamb). I wouldn't say that it's the perfect prog epic, since it is a bit too silly to be called an "epic" in that sense imo ^^ Most of the time I am greatly disturbed by comedy in music, but Genesis are one of the very few exceptions, it's so brilliantly mixed with great poetry and serious, very interesting compositions that I find it a great addition rather than something to drag the whole experience down.

Actually, on my android the track I've listened most to the recent days is indeed "Supper's Ready", despite it's length!

Not really. It is just recognised by many prog rock fans as a great work. It ticks many boxes; composition, musicianship (especially considering the bands age at the time), atmosphere, concept etc.

It's not for everyone, but is any piece of music. I remain underwhelmed by Caravan, but accept that they adored by many. Each to their own.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Willow Farm and the Apocalypse in 9/8 are awesome, but the rest doesn't do much for me. Objectively, I can see why the ending would be cathartic, but subjectively I feel nothing. So I voted for "I like it!". I remain underwhelmed by many of these so-called "epics".

I meant without sugar-coating it in order not to offend anyone. Never mind though, it's not important and it has nothing to do with the topic. Back to discussing the quality of Supper's Ready!

Shamed to say, being a prog head in the 70's (blame the hick town I lived in, could not find much Genesis), I had not fully heard Supper's Ready until about 6 years ago when I purchased Foxtrot.  Absolutely loved it at first listen.  It slowly winds its way through many wonderful phases then crescendos to a climatic end.  Epics need to build upon itself...

Not quite. But I'm having fun by your strange adoration, almost bordering on fanaticism.
