When Black Sabbath released Masters of Reality back in the 70s, it spawned a new generation of music that came around in the 90s. Nobody really knows the exact term for this generation, but it's been called stoner metal, doom metal, sludge metal, and drone metal...

Does anyone here at PA enjoy these metal subgenres? I for one, really enjoy the sonic experimentation and just extreme heaviness that many of these bands utilize.

If anyone wants to get started, here are some bands to take a closer look at.

Sleep - Dopesmoker, Sleep's Holy Mountain
Bongripper - The Great Barrier Reefer, Hippie Killer
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Om - Conference of the Birds, Variations on a Theme
Stoned Jesus - First Communion, Seven Thunders Roar
Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun, Sky Valley
Sunn O))) - Monoliths and Dimensions, Black One
Earth - Pentastar: In The Style of Demons, The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull (These guys are in the Archives, just worth mentioning here though)
Windhand - self-titled
Ocean Chief - Tor
I consider drone metal to be progressive...

Stoner rock definitely harbors some talent--  Santa Cruz's Mammatus and Asteroid from Sweden are two favorites

I like a good chunk of drone/sludge/doom/stoner metal every now and then. The Melvins' self titled (formerly called Lysol) album is fantastic.

I really forgot about Boris. Their collaboration with Sunn O))) (Altar, I think it was) is one of my favorite drone albums ever. The Melvins are really great too, kind of the forefathers of many contemporary acts

Well if Kyuss are here (rightfully) than Queens Of The Stone Age should also be here too.

Hey RedNightmareKing, the guy introduced me to the stoner genre has your avatar as a tattoo! He is a Pink Floyd freak. Mmmm....strange!!

A band that is on PA, TITAN, a blend of progressive rock and stoner

Down deserves a mention here :

And Unsane are not really stoner (rather noise/hardcore) but 'Visqueen' might appeal to fans of stoner :

"Magma was the very first gothic rock band" (Didier Lockwood)

I opened this thread expecting actually heavier/extreme metal.

Drone by itself is kinda boring IMO.

Drone is really an acquired taste, if you ask me. In my opinion, it really changes your idea of what music really is considered.

That's a great starting point, they're A LOT heavier than Kyuss though. Have fun!

I actually HATE everything that is Drone-related, but Stoner Rock/Metal gets me crazy, and I particuliarly love everything with John Garcia on vocals, so I add Unida and Slo Burn Smile

Unida:

Slo Burn:

Listening to them is like being stranded in the middle of the desert Sleepy

Isis is extremely heavy if you ask me - musically and lyrically. They were certainly influenced by the likes of Boris, Sun O))) and Neurosis.

Count me in!  Cathedral is my fave "stoner metal" band.  The 1st album was pure doom but I think "The Ethereal Mirror" is the greatest stoner metal album ever.  Also like Catacombs, Warhorse, Burning Witch, Goatsnake, Triptykon, Khanate, early Celtic Frost, and the Cephalic Carnage EP "The Halls of Amenti".
