Topic: 70's giants in the 90's and 2000's Posted: October 12 2012 at 18:34 |
Of course, the golden age for this bands was the 70's, however, which band do you like best for what they did in the 90's and 2000's?

It would have to be Yes! Sure, I don't think EVERY album they've done in that period is excellent, but I do own every one of them and enjoy them all. It makes it easy to vote for them because they've simply had the most releases in that time period out of all the bands. `Magnification' was superb, `Fly From Here' pleasant if unchallenging, and there's a bunch of enjoyable albums around them.

Again, King Crimson. Thrak is a good album, as is all the live stuff I've heard from the decade.

Let's see, either KC or Yes. Yes has some solid tracks from the last 2 decades, but not really to my liking. Whereas I like Vrooom, but I don't like Thrak, TCOL and TPTB.
Ill go with KC

King Crimson haven't made a bad album. Yes on the other hand..was awful around this period. Magnification wasn't that bad though.

Even though I don't know every album this bands have released during this period, I think I know enough to choose. I guess from the albums I know, the best one that I know is easily "The Power to Believe", however, my favourite songs done by any of this bands during this two decades are "Endless Dream", "Be the One", and "In the Presence of", plus some other songs from Magnification. The only song from "The Power to Believe" that I like as much as this songs is "Level 5", so in the end I go with Yes.

I should have added in my original reply that even though I voted for Yes, Crimso's `Power To Believe' is superb - an older band than sounded truly cutting edge, modern and inventive. I didn't enjoy the recent `Scarcity of Miracles' too much though, if that counts as a KC album?

However, I guess there's a reason it wasn't labeled as such, and it must be because it doesn't sound like anything they'd done before, nor was it created with the same ambition as their other albums.

King Crimson of course. This is a band that never cease to reinvent it self for good or for bad, and for that they have my deepest appreciation. Thrak and The Power To Believe are both fantastic, Scarcity Of Miracles is definitely good and original. The Construkction Of Light and Heaven And Earth are not so good but overall they certainly get my vote.

Of the 70s bands, only Camel have done anything great in the 90s and 00s.
Almost all the great music in that era came from bands like IQ, Marillion, Mostly Autumn, Riverside, Iona and others. All those bands listed in the poll were way past their sell by date by 1990, so I'm not voting.

The Power to Believe versus Magnification, I like both very very much, but KC it is.
But yes, I too think Camel's later output is by far above the bigger bands in consistency, Rajaz and a Nod and a Wink are two of their best albums and the previous two are very good too.

All Genesis had at this period was We Can't Dance and Calling All Stations from what I've heard, King Crimson easily.

Talk is the only album I've heard from those bands post 1990 that I like enough to rate 4 stars. Fly From Here is also pretty close although I don't have the same love for Magnification that others have. ELP made one respectable album Black Moon and then a complete turd In The Hot Seat. Genesis - Fading Lights is my favourite track from any of those bands post 1990 but don't care much for the rest of We Can't Dance. Havn't heard anything by King Crimson or Tull post 1990.
BTW shame that Kansas aren't in the poll as Somewhere To Elsewhere is one of their best albums any era (imo)
