I agree and I also love John Barlecorn and Low Spark but the Moodies recorded more lp's that were consistently good so I give the edge to them. Procol to me is as good as Traffic in their own right.

Here's a little trivia many folks may not know. Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues worked for the company that made the Mellotron. So, he had access to so much as an employee. And, Genesis bought their first Mellotron from King Crimson. Prior to that, they used to rent it from them. As I said, just a little trivia. |

Traffic's self-titled album is great. I'm surprised no one's mentioned this one, it's easily their best, IMO. What a tracklist, with tracks like You can all join in, Pearly queen, Don't be sad, Feelin' Alright, Vagabond virgin, Forty Thousand Headmen, No time to live, Means to an end... It has a great, upbeat vibe. It's not prog, it's pop, but of the best kind. http://www.allmusic.com/album/traffic-mw0000651445 ![]() Edited by jude111 - April 28 2013 at 21:34 |

All three bands are awesome to me but the Moody Blues are the only one of the three that actually fits the description perfectly.

I went with Procol who are one of my favorite bands of all time.
I think both Procol and the Moodies both influenced early King Crimson in a couple different ways. The Moodies through their groundbreaking use of the Mellotron...I believe Crimson bought their 1st tron from the Moodies. Procol through having a dedicated lyricist as part of the band even though they didn't play an instrument - Keith Reid. Of course Pete Sinfield filled that same role in Crimso.

I think this poll is going to get some proggers into these bands more. I heard
a lot of the Traffic stuff on the radio, without really knowing what it was. But it always seemed to have a heart to it, and be a little more complex than most other rock that was out there.

Though I like few of their albums, all three from some reason failed to really capture my attention. Guess I'm blaming my self.

Traffic. Moody Blues are a close second, and Procol Harum is third, just because I don't know them as well.

Moody Blues. Nights in White Satin itself is enough of a deciding factor, and all the other tracks of theirs I like are just icing on the cake.

For me, it's Procol Harum by a mile! They laid the ground work for all prog bands. Plus, they are the absolute best live band I have ever seen, ever. And I've seen many prog bands, e.g., Genesis, w/ and w/o Gabriel, Yes, E,L,P and others.

moodys, all groups are good, but the others were not as consistent, which might make them more apealing if you like that lack of focus. The Moodys were nothing if not focused, possibly to a fault.

That's a tough one!
I got all Procol's records, all Traffic's records, and the first 7 from the Moodie's. I will vote for Procol Harum, which are one of my most favorite bands, and the other two together in the second place... |
