THIS IS THE BIGGEST DEBATE IN THE UNIVERSE

who are the founding stoner rock/metal band is it the mighty Kyuss or the mythical Soundgarden who slowwed down tha punk and alternative rock and made it more sabbathy.

IN MY ULTRACORRECT BOOK

MELVINS coined sludge metal

NEUROSIS coined post metal

SOUNDGARDEN coined stoner rock

THE HOLY TRINITY OF INNOVATION

in what way is this not stoner metal? I believe Sabbath laid down the blueprints for stoner metal just like they did for heavy metal, doom metal, and metal in general.

I wouldn't even call Soundgarden stoner rock, so Kyuss I guess. But I still call the former alternative rock and the latter plain heavy metal.

Soundgarden is to heavy and bleak to be only alternative rock

this album influenced metallica on the black album

it is pure stoner rock

And this whole "stoner rock" is just a scam: back in the times, it was heavy rock.
I remember reading some metal magazines calling Monster Magnet "psychaedelical heavy rock", nothing more!

As great as Soundgarden are, they have no relevance in the evolution of rock music. At least not yet.

Soundgarden has some slowed heavy stuff but I wouldn't go far and call it stoner. I'm no expert on stoner bands but Kyuss always seemed to me like one of the pioneers.

they are sighted with Faith No More as the first alternative metal band they influenced Metallica on the Black Album, they influenced Kyuss, Alice in Chains, Deftones, Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me and Clutch, they are the second band after Melvins to have drop D and drop B and drop C tuned guitars in rock, they are the most technical band in grunge and have insane times sigs, which indicates a link towards math rock, and KIm Thaiyl is probably the most imitated guitarist in 90s alternative metal scene,  and in slow played metal, Kim Thayle is very important to the way people approached guitar in the 90s that weren't shred guitarists
