Well, those two are probably the best master of suspense films ever.

Hitchcock is best-known for 'Vertigo', 'Rear Window', 'Psycho', 'The Man Who Knew Too Much (1954 remake)', 'North By Northwest', 'Stage Fright', 'The Spellbound' and many many more.

Polanski's finest work include 'Repulsion', 'Rosemay's Baby', 'The Tenant', 'Chinatown', 'Cul-de-Sac', 'The Fearless Vampire Hunters'.

Whose movies you enjoy more?

For me I can't decide, vote for both.

Surely you jest. Hitchcock, no contest.

Although the ones you listed are not my favorites by him. I like Rope and Strangers On A Train.

^No jest, just my favourite suspense directors. Polanski did really terrific works.

I love both 'Rope' and 'Strangers...' too, 'Rope is my second-favourite Hitchcock's movie after 'Vertigo'. I haven't listed it because it's not as well known as 'Psycho' or 'Rear Window'

Hitchcock, no contest.
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Polański's 'nóż w wodzie' (the knife in the water) is his masterpiece, but often overshadowed by his US productions.

He has shown a certain versatility in his works, and is also a good actor (cf Wajda's 'Zemsta').

But Hitchcock remains the master of suspense.

Now what about a poll to decide between Krzysztof Komeda Trzciński and Bernard Hermann ?

It's a tie for me. Both are masters of suspence thrillers, and while Hitchcock remains a legend, Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby" and "Chinatown" are also right up there with the best thrillers ever made.

If I had only seen Rear Window alone, I'd vote for Hitchcock. Add in Vertigo and Rope and it's a done deal.

Polanski made other excellent movies too, like "Repulsion" starring Catherine Deneuve, "The Tenant" featuring Isabelle Adjani or "What?" featuring Sidney Rome; the latter is one of my favorite Polanski films. Just to see Sidney Rome hopping around with her hands cuffed to her feet is worth watching the movie.

Oh, and I almost forgot his "Macbeth" featuring a soundtrack of the Third Ear Band.. So for me it is a tie between the two. Comparing them is like comparing apples to oranges though, in my opinion. You might as well throw in other thriller directors like Claude Chabrol (who is very underrated).
