OK, I left out a few important ones like The Nice, Procul Harum, and some of the major canterbury bands like Hatfield and the North, National Health and and Egg but you can't have everyone. I sincerely apologize to fans of those bands since they are all great in their own right. I also apologize to Le Orme and Dream Theater fans. King Crimson, ELP and Rush were too obvious and some might say Kansas aren't really second tier either. Oh well. I tried folks. I tried. Tongue

VDGG, but honestly, it's a little painful to know they're regarded as second tier. Cry They're first in my book and it wouldn't surprise or bother me in the slightest if they hold that spot for life.

Well I know. I hear you. But I'm going by the thought of if I asked some guy off the street which ones would they have heard of. The ones the average Joe would know about would be first tier. Plus many of these bands never got the attention they deserved. ANd before some of you say the average Joe would know Kansas that might be true but most people think of them as classic rock and not prog. Only us freaks know the truth about these bands. Tongue

Haha of course, totally understand. After all, if the members of this site got to determine which groups are grouped into which tier, the world would collapse under the weight of its collective increase of awesome Tongue

I tend to think of them as second tier, where as bands such as King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, ELP, Pink Floyd, and Genesis (the big 6) would be 1st tier. Though I love GG and VDGG a lot more than some of the big six bands.

Anyways I'm voting for Camel, a band that is certainly in my top 5.

It's not up to his opinion what's first-tier and second-tier, it's famousness. Tull are a well known rock group that are a lot more famous than Gentle Giant and VdGG, thus making them first-tier. I'm not at all saying that JT are any better than GG or VdGG, but they're just a more popular progressive rock band.

I don't think you can make that difference between first tier and second tier. The average person would hardly know Yes or Genesis either if it weren't for a few albums most of the community consider to be "pop". And when I ask my brother, who is ten years older than I am, how it had been in his young days he would tell you that bands like Uriah Heep, Deep Purple or Santana were much better known than Genesis or Yes.

Of these bands here it is very hard for me to choose between Gong, Magma and Van der Graaf Generator; I like all three very much.

I can tell you which of these bands is my least favourite one though: Barclay James Harmless.

Out of all of these, Gentle Giant for sheer volume of quality. Really wanted to vote VDGG or Soft Machine too though

Morgan weren't mentioned because they aren't second tier. THey might not even be third tier. Geez, if I included them I'd have to include A LOT of other bands including Greenslade, Fruupp and Curved Air just to mention a few.One band who I really should have included was Triumvirat. Oh well.

Forum members can't officially vote in polls til their post count reaches 40. It's not that I didn't want to from the start, I just wasn't able to at the time.
