A guy from "Deserted Village", the same label of Universal Bible Studies, has introduced me to this weird duo.
Too folk for Avant but really interesting. |

Thinguma*jigSaw is a "splatterfolk" duo, consisting of Martha Redivivus aka Little Myth (saw, flute, melodica, ukulele & guitar, vocals, artwork & illustrations) and Seth Buncombe aka The Severed Headmaster (banjo, vocals & poetic musings). The less said about their origins and backgrounds, the better. To quote Jandek: "You may not get all the answers you want. It`s better that way". Let us start with the genre "splatterfolk"; "Splatterfolk" is Thinguma*jigSaw`s very own artistic niche, subtly combining influences from the darker domains of Irish/British/American/Scandinavian folk-music with contemporary art music. (This is not to say that "splatterfolk" is the one and only suitable nickname for the style of the duo. Numerous others have been proposed, such as "snuff-pop" - "doomballadry" and "deathbed lullabies". However, the term "splatterfolk" tends to stick) http://www.thingumajigsaw.com/bio.html Edited by seventhsojourn - March 06 2013 at 01:53 |

I've never heard about this genre before. Do you think it's suitable for the site? I have no idea honestly. What I have liked is that their genre is totally new for me.
I've been introduced to them by a guy from Deserted Village who has sent me a free download link.

Splatterfolk huh? New genres are invented on a daily basis it seems.

We're pondering this one. Never heard of splatterfolk, but a Deserted Village endorsement and a Jandek quote pique my interest at least...

I listened to some of this this morning. Is there a requirement that Prog Folk bands have a Rock element? Because this one didn't seem to.

Not necessarily. The real question is whether they have roots in folk and are more than just a glorified chamber music band. And for these guys, whether Avant/RIO might be more appropriate. |

Avanr/RIO is my second choice in case they are rejected from prog-folk.

Enjoyed their music, but considered they cannot get a place in PA, sadly.

"Enjoyed their music" is the reason why I post bands. If they don't fit is not a problem.
My problem is that "prog" is for me a state of mind and sometimes artusts of this kind (and not only) are able to turn on some switches in my mind. Speaking more technically, I'm aware that they are too borderline otherwise I would have proposed them to our chart first. The man has a fantastic voice and the girl is an awesome multi-instrumentist. I have enjoyed their music too, and this is enough. |

Cleaning up our backlog and came across this one. Much as I like these guys and their pedigree, we decided they don't really qualify as progressive folk per se. There are unmistakable folk influences in their music, but really the same could be said of certain elements of Led Zeppelin, Green Carnation and Opeth and they aren't in Prog Folk either.
So anyway, was wondering if the RIO/Avant team might want to reconsider. |

As a ZART member I've given them "NO" vote previously (and will do so still now), I love their stuffs though.
