Grace For Drowning is his best. Voted for Insurgentes, just to support it. That's strange, but I prefer it to the Raven

The Raven, easily.
Insurgentes was WAAAAAY overhyped in my opinion ; most of the songs on it sounded like bad PT leftovers. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big PT fan.

Just got The Raven, and I must say I'm really impressed with it. I didn't expect to like it better than Grace for Drowning, which I found to be something rather special, but with a few spins I'm sure I'm liking the Raven better, it's just flawless and every song is great. I guess in the end Grace had just something that put me a bit off it, perhaps it sounded a bit incomplete, or had too many soft moments, I don't know. And I feel The Raven might just as well be the most progressive album (in the traditional sense) I've heard from Wilson / Porcupine Tree.

Grace. I feel like I should withhold the reasons for my choice on this one (especially regarding The Raven).

It may be pretty early days since it's release but I think I have to say The Raven.
I
find Insurgentes a fantastic album, and GFD only just behind, perhaps
only a little short of the sparkle and diversity of the first. GFD is
brilliant too though.
I have to say though that I am bowled
over by The Raven, what a piece of work this is. All the tracks are
absolutely stunning, the musicianship is tight as a drum and the
performance of the album by Steve and his band when I saw them on tour
recently was beyond awesome. The Raven is an emotional experience and
to end the album with the pure genius of the title track is almost too
much. Incredible.

Actually, I usually consider that being a double albums is a disadvantage, for it is harder to fill a double album with great material than a single one. However, Grace for Drowning must be among my very favourite dobule albums. And I'm putting it above "The Wall", "Topographic Oceans", "The Lamb", etc. Indeed, it might just as well be my favourite double album. |
That's the thing with Steven Wilson. It's one of my favorite all-time double albums too!! But even so, I gotta choose The Raven. After I listen to that album once, I gotta spin it again. It can't beat The Lamb or The Wall, but ranked sky-high up there. You're right though, a plethora of artists mess the whole double album format. Most artists construct a double-album just for the idea--It's hard to balance the quality of music throughout, and GfD does that. I can't choose my favorite song from that album because it's all so fantastic and deserves a full-length, one-sitting listen. The Raven goes down as one of the all-time, best album concept/music/production...
