Topic: Big Six in the 80s Posted: March 18 2013 at 18:17 |
Ah, the Big Six! Purveyors of prog classics that we all know and love. But then came the 1980s, and something changed. Who fared the best in the 1980s?

None of them really covered themselves in glory.
Probably Floyd were the least awful.

Wow. Tough for me to pick the best of these. Genesis had Duke, Abacab, Side 1 of Genesis and about half of Invisible Touch with a few cool b-sides to boot. All incredible. Yes had Drama and 90125, both awesome albums. Of course, they did have Big Generator which was not as good as the other two. King Crimson had Discipline and Three of a Perfect Pair. Love them both. Beat, not as much. It wasn't a bad album, just kind of ok, except for Neal & Jack & Me, which is one of my favorite Crimson songs. ELP had the stunning Emerson Lake & Powell. Tull had the wonderful Crest of a Knave and Broadsword and the Beast. Of course there was also the rather boring Rock Island. Have to admit to not having heard A or Under Wraps (but if the single Lap of Luxury is any indication, I'm not missing much on the latter). Think I'm just going to have to go with Genesis, but it's really tight.

It was a tough call between KC and Genesis. I love all three of the Crimson albums, but if Duke and Abacab were a tad bit better Genesis would get my vote. But for now it'll have to be KC

I would have expected Rush to be here, especially when discussing the 80's. They would have been my vote. They actually released peaking material then.
KC from this list.

King Crimson were incredible in the 80s, the rest merely ok.
On second thought, there is nothing "ok" about 80s ELP.

This isn't about that, it's about the old Big Six of the classic 69-73 (or whenever) era, and how they fared after their prime. Maybe there's a secondary Big Six - Rush, VDGG, Hawkwind, Caravan, Deep Purple, and The Wombles

Between King Crimson and Tull for me. I like Broadsword and the Beast and Crest of a Knave, the rest... not at all. I only listen to Discipline of the three 80s KC albums, but I enjoy it more than the Tull ones I like. So... King Crimson.

These were all pretty good, in my opinion. Genesis gets my vote, with Crimso close behind.

I voted for Yes since I'm a fanboy and think their 80's work is very under rated by prog fans. Less poppy than Genesis too. KC would be my second choice. KC's 80's output is admittedly the least poppy and most prog sounding but they still had a bit of a cutting edge almost Talking Heads vibe going on then.

I actually think Genesis was more proggy in the 80's than Yes West --when they were proggy and more poppy when they were poppy. Yes West was too AOR for my ears ---and Yes and Genesis are my favorite bands (at least the 70's versions)

80s Crimson was just as good as 70s Crimson.
