because I have good taste in music and I can distinguish good death metal from bad death metal.

All tongue in cheek sarcasm aside, I love both metal and death metal like a tooth loves drills but Opeth are no more and no less than a modern eclectic rock band surely?

Moreover it's really deep DEATH metal, all their riff have much more imagination than a lot of metal bands, their songs are intensely worked and they are masters in the srtuctures art. For me, Opeth touches to the perfection.

That's basically how I see them too.  One of the main problems with death metal is the forced-sounding aggression and repetitiveness.  I think of Opeth as a band that writes brilliant, detailed music that naturally flows from death metal to acoustic rock.  Their song writing really sets them apart.

given the myriad of prog-rock bands those days I would say yes.

So an original take on vintage prog rock is selling out today? And an artist can have the liberty to make a changing of sound/orientation.

you see, just like amorphis or ulver they deny their past and try to do more "respectable" music (they know that they wouldn't sell as well when continuing playing death metal).

I for one have much more respect for bands like Suffocation or Bolt Thrower which completely assume their metal legacy and keep playing what they are known for, regardless of trends and attraction to money.

I wouldn't try to convince you absolutely, but you can't only reduce Opeth to long slow passages, it's well more varied than what you said. I think Opeth is quite different from the other metal bands and their intentions are certainly not to do gently or acceptable death metal. And then a band can sell well and keep its quality and artistic integrity. But, if you know it, what do you think about their last single "The Devil's Orchard" wich is mainly progressive rock and no longer Death metal? > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1pi7Dn87mY

a bit of humour never killed anyone, why does everyone takes so seriously each other's words. I express my dislike of Opeth and everyone here tries to explain that I am wrong. Seriously, long slow passages for a death metal band don't work for me, unless you are a death/doom band like Disembowelment. I have very broad tastes in music, and this experience of other musical genres allows me to draw a line between what is good and what is not for me. I have other things to do than lose my time listening to a massive-selling band that tries to give an "acceptable" image of death metal.

Well, there's nothing criminal if one doesn't like some band, but when that one is saying that listening to this band is not a good taste — that's simply ignorant, that's all. Unfortunately there's a lot of ignorance in this worldUnhappy

I know many metalheads who, like me dug all the major death metal bands of the late eighties/early nineties back in the days (Carcass, Bolt Thrower, At The Gates, early Death, Master, Massacra, Loudblast...) and they abhorre Opeth. So no, people who love metal are not prone to like Opeth.

Sorry I don't know the german prog band but I'm shocked about your vision of Opeth. Opeth is as good from the intellectual side as the headbanging side, and this one is surely one of the most powerful and heavy!
